I think it's hard for anyone experiencing constant pain to be nice and kind to others.

A la King Henry VIII and the sore on his leg.

I live in a 55+. The few cranky ones seem jealous and disappointed.

Having served on the product development team for the invention of dirt, I feel I have earned the right to be cantankerous at times.

Maybe it's because non-retirees make broad sweeping generalizations

Or is this a more recent phenomenon?

I have noticed the same. Old people are the worst....They believe everyone should bow down to them and give them the extra attention since they're "senior citizens"

Some old people volunteer and do all kinds of good things after retirement - others retire and then have no plan just sitting home doing absolutely nothing or their health starts to deteriorate - all they do is go to doctor appointments, watch TV, and sleep.

To me the key is trying to get up with society as you age. Too many people - especially old people pine for their younger years and except the world to turn backwards. The 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s are gone forever. Things never stay the same. They will always change.
