I am 64, and I always used to love the major holidays and cooking the special holiday meals, but I now view holidays as just more work and not worth the trouble. (Btw, even when it was just my husband and I before we had the kids and after they left home, I still enjoyed the holidays until just a year or two ago, so it is not a "sad because it's just us and there aren't any kids around" kind of thing.)

Anyone else feel that way?

No. It’s my day off and if I’m not in the mood to cook then it’s eat out, or do carry out. Maybe you should declare it’s your holiday too.

I think holiday celebrations have changed over the years. I am not yet 70, but the only holidays my family celebrated when I was a child were Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The rest of the holidays were calendar commemorations (especially Labor Day and Memorial Day). Might have a BBQ on Fourth of July, but never went anywhere to see fireworks.

Fast forward to today, there are more holidays, and people are hell-bent on celebrating them with huge parties, lots of booze, etc. It is over-the-top now, and the pressure, re: "What are you doing for the holiday" (from store clerks even) is incredible.

I am not a fan of holidays for other reasons (family strife) - and will not be out "partying" in the streets today

I used to love to cook, but not now. So we like to go out to eat.

I enjoy a quiet holiday now. I see some of my family members going out and partying and wonder why?

Then think - maybe cuz they had kids and didn't have the single life that I did? I got it all out of my system? LOL

yes - seems like a competition. Especially with social media - you can see what everyone is doing.

No enthusiasm for the holidays. It has been that way for years. My "celebration" consists of being thankful I live here in the USA (sure there are things to complain about, but at least I have a place to live, food to eat, water to drink, and I'm not fearful for my life).

All I have to do is watch the news on TV and see what people in other countries deal with.

Has anyone else lost their enthusiasm for holidays?

Things change as we age. The main thing is we lose family and friends that made holidays special. We once had family that we got together with at Thanksgiving, Christmas and so on. We don't have much family left, just a few distant cousins. I don't even decorate much for Christmas anymore. We have a little nativity scene we put out and small ceramic tree that we plug in, that's it. I keep saying I'm going to buy some lights to wrap around the orange tree out back! lol

We no longer go to the fireworks on the 4th because it's just so darn hot down here in Texas and I worry about my husband in the extreme heat.

I always enjoyed giving out candy at Halloween but kids don't come here, in fact before moving here we hadn't had kids in years.

Our little retirement community does get together for cookouts, potlucks and lots of other things so we don't sit home staring at the walls very often. Holidays are just different now.

To much commercial emphasis on the spending they want us to do for "holidays" which are often created by marketers.

Genuine get togethers to celebrate family, thankfulness, and enjoyment of each other don't need a "holiday".

I had to work every holiday, every single one, for over 30 years. So now, yeah I love holidays. Just not the tourists, traffic, noise, crowds...oh wait.

It's America's 242nd birthday.

That makes it a very big day for me regardless of what I eat.
