Do you feel pressured to keep up?

I'm still working but I have a dear client who moved to FL and found his living expenses greatly reduced.

Lived within means for a couple of years, however, the friends from NY all started moving here and all of sudden, it's party time ALL the time and he's feeling the credit card angst!

Anyone feel this?

(Kind of guilty of this recently when I bought concert tickets - I wanted VIP tickets b/c I wanted certain seats so I did pay more and it was well worth the price. Now, we went by ourselves but if we had another couple go with us, we most likely would have been more conscious of this).

I meet my retired friends when I am traveling in their part of the world, and they meet me... There is no competition / need to spend $$ (nor has there ever been.)

We are each well adjusted and no pressure (to ourselves or each other).

For VIP tickets... we volunteer usher (free tickets). (as do our friends)

I do not let the tail of my friends wag this ole dog.

I don’t care about keeping up of that type. Just hoping my husband does not cave to it now that the Bucket Listers are frequently telling him about travel plans etc.

I guess buying talk-it-up experiences is like buying expensive toys now.

Smile What my client was telling me....

He has lots of interests and has joined lots of clubs. His wife has also, however, not as many.

Seems most of the women were SAHM moms back in the day and used to just spending when they wanted.
She was a working woman and this new freedom is kind of fun for her and she's not had this experience before since they were responsible.

Now, with so much time on their hands (her hands), this group of women shops until they drop and he has just discovered the intensity of it (on the credit cards). Then, they also go to lunch and to the spa, stuff like that.

Their income is good (pensions also) but it's early for retirement even though they are just over 70.

I think he is struggling to find a good balance for them.

Early for retirement at early 70s? Just about everyone is retired by then.

see - that's why those people should have partied when they were younger. Get that out of their system instead of having kids -lol

I see people 20 years older than me out drinking and partying like there is no tomorrow and just don't know how they do it!

My thought too! 70 is pretty late in my book.

Anyway. No we don't try to keep up. Everyone has their own interests, and we're very mindful of our budget, and we don't charge things.

Actually the one that is always trying to get me to spend is my BFF who is still working. She's a travel junkie and sometimes I will go with, just to spend time with her (she lives 2500 miles away). She spends money as soon as she gets it, and has little saved for retirement.

No. We were frugal up to retirement. After a few years retired, we realized that we have much more spendable income, (and no debt), than we did before retirement. We do not deny ourselves. Our retirement lifestyle is similar to that of our friends. No pressure- we all have some different interests and preferences on spending money. Just because one friend builds a two story four bay garage to collect vintage cars, or another takes an African safari, doesn’t mean we feel pressure to follow suit. We will enjoy the photos of wildlife and the rides in the vintage GT-40, and the relating of their experiences.
