I have investments to monitor. There are no days off, but the rewards have been worthwhile. The day after the 2016 presidential election was the best day of my life from an investment standpoint.

I have collecting interests and always have something interesting to read. I can't imagine living without something to do.

No, I don't feel guilty when I'm doing nothing, because I'm actually thinking about doing something.

Thinking is important.

OP, you must be joking! I know you're not joking, but the idea is completely foreign to me and many others.

Feeling guilty is such a foreign and strong negative reaction and emotion to feel over something so inconsequential - which is doing whatever you feel like doing in your retirement - or even during days away from work, if one is still working.

Where did you get the idea that just enjoying life is wrong or reflects negatively on you, as an individual?

If one has a spouse or partner who inflicts duties and tasks upon their spouse and makes one feel negligent, I can see why you might ask the question you did in your original post.

Life is for enjoyment in retirement!

Sure there are always mundane tasks which need to be completed in living, but most or many tasks can be done at any time - and there are no rigid reasons to not often ignore them.

I think you might be taking the 'puritan work ethic' too far!

And reading is definitely 'doing something' - reading is a life blood. As is taking in information and knowledge.

Yes I do feel guilty it’s awful in that I have been retired 12 years
And feel the need to be “ productive”

I don't feel guilty about anything I'm doing (or not doing).

Yes, I feel the same, though I’ve only been retired six years. I imagine that won’t change, though. In my case, also, I think it’s because I’ve been somewhat obsessive about regular exercise my whole life, so, if I don’t get off my butt all day, guilt ensues.

No. But nothing does include reading, watching TV, posting here, eating and sleeping.

But I will always have to feed my dogs and let them out to exercise until the last one crosses the bridge.....

I think the emotion of feeling guilty can be very different from the need to feel productive during any given day.

Lots of people may have feelings of needing to feel productive......without having feelings of guilt.

But feeling productive and having done 'something' can take many forms. Even sitting on one's porch or balcony or yard or patio can be productive - in that one may be reading, looking at nature, enjoying a beautiful day, finding joy in retirement.

All this alleged guilt is self created. Don't create arbitrary, unnecessary rules or obligations for yourself. Therefore, you can't create guilt around them. Review your options, make a choice, and then live with that choice.
