Which, by definition, means half the population is incapable of doing it.

"Counting back" change isn't simply counting the change.

If you can "count back" change, you don't need a cash register to determine the change. So according to your own standard, anyone handling money today doesn't need to do that, since machines do it for them.

You can always tell when people don't know what it means to "count back" change. It's not just counting money.

Give me a quarter and say "16" and then count the one dollar bills into my hand as "17, 18, 19, 20." This concept is utterly lost on the recent generation.

When those registers go down or malfunction, they are totally lost, bless their hearts.

I think we should all start using cash again, write in cursive, and drive manual transmissions. We could cripple an entire generation!! :-)

EXACTLY.

The cashier starts from the total price, then draws coins and bills from the till, adding to that price, until they get to the amount of money tendered. Then they count it BACK to the customer, the same way.

People who work as cashiers don't get to decide whether or not to use a cash register. It's their job to use the cash register at their workstation. It's not like they choose this. Make any sense? They can't go to work and refuse to use a cash register to do transactions with customers.

No, but there's nothing preventing them from counting change back properly.

You're way off base. This person's argument is that cashiers choose to use cash registers. They don't. It's a decision made by corporate offices.

Just saying ... regardless of whether or not they choose to or are forced to use cash registers ... I'd prefer to see them count it out.

Why do you care as long as you get your correct change back? Nobody else cares. Why do you?

As far as fast food, some are okay, but you couldn't pay me to do business with the rest. I definitely work enough at home (BTW, this is called retirement? doesn't at all resemble the retirements depicted in AARP magazines...travel, going out to dance or eat at fancy restaurants, etc.). I am certainly not going to work at a fast food restaurants! I guess I'll retire when I die...doesn't seem like I'll get a chance to enjoy anything until after I do!

Why do YOU?

My mom used to talk about people who loved to "argue with a signpost".
