While reading about the latest environmental warning that says that humanity either might be or probably will be basically doomed due to climate change in about 60 years or so, I was thinking how much has happened in the past 50 years that I either did not foresee or did not think would happen so soon.

What can you add to the following list that YOU did not foresee?

- Smartphones
- Personal computers
- The rise of Neo Nazi groups
- Legal same-sex marriages
- Kindles and other electronic books
- The International Space Station
- The Internet and social media (i.e., Facebook)
- The end of so many daily newspapers and the "dumbing down" of most nightly newscasts
- Many more highly over-protective parents

P.S. This thread is NOT meant to start a discussion about whether global warming is real or not, or to start a debate about the pros or cons of any issue or invention. There is already a thread on this in the P&OC forum about the global warming issue -- Trump Administration’s Strategy on Climate: Try to Bury Its Own Scientific Report -- and I would guess for any other issue that might come up, also!

Mobile phones. I grew up with flip phones. Even ten years ago, they were common.

- Smartphones
Yes, this seems like something it would have taken until about 2025 to have been perfected
- Personal computers
No, these essentially existed when I was in high school in the late '70's not surprising at all.
- The rise of Neo Nazi groups
Maybe, hard to predict political movements in the future
- Legal same-sex marriages
Yes, somewhat of a surprise
- Kindles and other electronic books
Not a surprise at all to me, this is just a dumb word processor made flat.
- The International Space Station
Not at all with emphasis, in fact, we are behind where I thought we would be as far as space exploration goes.
- The Internet and social media (i.e., Facebook)
The internet, no, the way it has been dumbed down so quickly, yes
- The end of so many daily newspapers and the "dumbing down" of most nightly newscasts
I am frankly surprised these still exist, or more accurately why people even watch these now that the internet is widely available, why wait and have someone else tell you what is important or how to think?
- Many more highly over-protective parent
Sadly, no this was the trend even in the 1980's and has just gotten worse.

I would say the true effects of the world population being almost 8 billion and the fact that it has actually happened, all of the pressure of immigration and the ability for many many people to travel internationally, and how it has worked out politically is somewhat of a surprise to me, however it is something my history teacher in the 1970's predicted, so maybe not.

Disregard for basic privacy expectations and for copyright laws, thanks to the ridiculous ease of obtaining, dispersing, “modifying, copying, and stealing intellectual property.

The rise of socialisms popularity here.
Big car engines and big cars gone.
Family sedans that little old ladys drive that beat 60's 400 cubic inch muscle cars.
Trucks and SUV's becoming so popular that companies are not making cars.
Fully equipped trucks are now luxury cars.
Homeless growth

That my generation (that of flower power, summer of love, etc.) would evolve into “the establishment.”

The internet was not even invented in 1968.
And, ARPANET was only invented in 1968.
