But my wife has been making her famous blackberry truffles and rum cakes.

This may be the year I say the heck with it and ask Santa to consult the big and tall shop.

Hmm...I don't usually gain any noticeable weight during the holidays. It's pretty simple. Don't eat that stuff. If you feel you must so your wife isn't insulted, nibble just a little. But, if your wife understands that you want to watch your weight she shouldn't get offended in the first place. If you go to a party and feel obligated to drink, nurse one drink a lot longer. If you indulge in the food, you know you will need to eat more carefully the next day or so to balance that. We control what we eat. No one else is tying you to a chair and cramming it down your throat.

Ship those to me. Problem solved... for one of us anyway.

Merry Christmas!

Actually, that was my first wife and her damn fruitcake.

But thanks for the advice.

Skip the carbs - rely on lean meats, veggies (no potatoes). Have ONE slice of pie or cake.

You mean that we should not celebrate Christmas?

This is a tough time a year for me too. Sure, I know how to avoid stuff, but these are long-time favorites that are only made once a year and they are delicious. Lemon Ricotta Cookies, Cranberry Date-Nut Bars. Unfortunately, my metabolism is not what it used to be and now I pay for eating them, but they bring me joy.

I don't entertain at the holidays so there's nothing at home to tempt me and I'm happy with that. I visited DS and DDIL over Thanksgiving, ate too much good stuff, went back to healthy eating, lost the few lbs. I gained and am ready for my road trip to the Carolinas over Christmas where I will again visit with family and eat too much meat and too many cookies.

What helps: I weigh myself daily when I'm home, so I know when I get home I'll see the consequences (although I may put it off a day). I almost never miss a daily workout. Hotel gyms and pools and my Planet Fitness Black Card membership are handy. I also don't stuff myself and I load my plate with a lot of veggies and lean meat and less stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. Cookies are good but I eat 2, not 10.

I'm having gallbladder issues, trying to hold off doing anything about them till after the holidays. The food restrictions so I don't feel entirely miserable should limit any weight gain for me. Not a fun way to go for sure.
