A toy dog. It was one of those rubbery/plastic ones where only the head moved. It was the size of a really small dog. I remember it because I had it for a long time. I don't actually remember getting it because I was so young, but I remember having it and being told about when I got it as a toddler. i had it as a memento for several years after I stopped playing with it.
The first present I remember was a Baby Tenderlove doll from Mom and Dad, a high chair from Santa and an entire wardrobe for the doll made by my grandma. I remember waking up Christmas morning and that high chair was wrapped so I had no idea what it was but it was the biggest gift under the tree! I must have been either 4 or 5 because we had moved from that house before Christmas when I turned 6.
You lucky people who can remember your first Christmas present! All I remember from early on was a big stocking with my name across the white part at the top. My parents made a big deal about having my name on the stocking. Me? Couldn't read/didn't care. I had that same stocking well into adulthood.
LOL I have no clue what my 1st Christmas gift was. The OP said What was the first Christmas present you remember? I just shared the 1st gifts I remember from Christmas.
Probably a Big Bruiser battery powered tow truck by Marx at age 5 or 6.
I still have the tow truck and pickup with replaceable damaged fender. I was planning to repair it so that the truck would operate for my own sons when they were young. Now they are 38 and 36 and the tow truck is still in the attic with the same intermittent electrical issues it had when I was a pre-teen.
According to family lore, I received a fancy spring mounted rocking horse for Christmas of 1958 when I was 2-1/2. The next month my older sister had a 6th Birthday Party with her entire grade school class and the boy guests to her party snapped off the neck of my horse. Maybe too many riders? Maybe nothing else of interest for them to do but play with my horse? My parents replaced it but couldn't find the same model, so the one I remember from years of play is simpler/less detailed than the first horse.
I don't know if I was inconsolable about the broken horse, or if my parents felt incredibly guilty about inviting too many kids and/or not enough chaperones. Either way the broken horse was replaced, and other than a couple of grainy 60 year old Ekta-Chrome slides I would have no idea what the original horse looked like.
I actually liked the looks of the replacement horse better.
A dog! You lucky devil! I remember getting a Chatty Cathy doll. I had been wanting one but was sorely disappointed that she didn't really talk to me. There was only about a half dozen things she would say when her string was pulled. There was no real conversation.
Not my first one, but I remember us getting a 1969 World Book Encyclopedia.
It weighed a ton. And I still have it.
