I am talking about SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI) for low-income senior person (65+ years old).
If my dad is receiving SSI (based on low income, low asset, age), does he need to renew annually? Can it be renewed online? It is nightmare to visit local SSA local office, it takes quite a few hours of waiting time. Moreover, I live far way from my dad, so it actually takes me two days to bring him to local SSA office (I need to arrive to his state one day earlier, then bring him to local SSA office, then go back to my own home), plus transportation cost from my home to his state.
Does anyone have experience about SSI renewal? Can it be done online or via phone?
Not sure, but it sounds like you can create a mysocialsecurity account for him and check on the status. Also, he should be getting a letter every year with a benefit statement, and that should tell him what he needs to do to continue benefits, if anything.
My grandson gets SSI and we have never had to do anything to renew it. That would be even more true I would think if you are over 65.
There is a list of things that you must report to SS having to do with changes in circumstances It is listed on the website listed in post number 2.
