Way back in the day - 1970's, early '80's, I visited Las Vegas many times for various business conventions, the Bahamas, too. Knew more about gambling then, knew something about craps and roulette, actually rolled the dice/played both. Seems I recall winning at craps and then playing roulette and losing my entire stake within a minute. We were done for the night. In those days, we stayed at Caesar's for the most part, but went to other downtown casinos as well. So long ago now, I hardly remember.

One thing I remember about Vegas - there were some scary dudes working those floors. Pit bosses right out of the mob book. Is it still like that? Contrast that with the Indian casino - night and day. No one there looked professional or scary - at all.
They don’t look like that in Atlantic City. Many are women now too. Most are former dealers who got promoted.

This is why I don’t play blackjack anymore. I don’t know that much about it, I’m sure i often hit when I shouldn’t and vice versa. I’m there to have fun though, it’s not my job. I didn’t like feeling negative vibes and now haven’t played in years.

I have however made close to $300 this football season so far without leaving my house!

Last time I was in a casino was last year. Won a one night stay at the Santa Claran in Espanola, NM and tickets to the Puye Cliff Dwellings.

Room was very, very nice, big casino (spent $1.00) and restaurant was expensive (breakfast). Combined it with a trip to Santa Fe.

It was ok, but I would not go there to gamble. I would rather buy native American jewelry with my cash.

No interest in gambling because I'm not the type who ever wins.

Long ago, maybe 1970, ex husband and I drove cross country and I made a point of stopping in Las Vegas just to see it. In the middle of the night I walked into a casino and saw worn out looking people with drinks in their hands, sticking coins into machines, endlessly. One woman looked like my stereotype of a casino addict. Older lady, heavy makeup, glittery type dress but wearing sneakers or something, cigarette, drink...she looked like a former hooker, been around the block a few hundred times.

Anyway, I was watching her and she finally looked fed up that nothing ever came out of that slot machine. She walked away. I decided to try my hand at it so I went to her machine, inserted a quarter, and money came crashing down out of it, all over the floor. Some employees came over with a bag or something and helped me gather up the money and brought me a drink.

That was it. I probably made $20. Went outside and dh took a picture of me in the middle of the night in front of The Golden Nugget with everything lit up just like daytime. So it was pretty interesting, but I mainly wanted to say that I had been there.

Saw gambling when we went on a cruise a few years ago and thought, "Good. Go ahead and gamble because the money you stick into those machines is helping to keep the cruise prices cheap."

You can get a basic Blackjack card at any casino in the shops. A good place to start. Or use the one I do which is slightly different.

I don’t want to study and do all that though. I just want to sit and play $5.00 for a little bit, often to pass the time till a concert starts or the friends I came with are ready to go. I never really gamble to make money. Even football which I have done well on ( tried and won a 3-game parlay this past weekend I really only bet on teams other than the Eagles to make it more fun to watch games I wouldn’t otherwise care about who won.

Sometimes its like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
Yes! I was so disappointed when I found the roulette games at the Hard Rock in Hollywood FL (maybe all FL casinos?) are electronic. I tried one or two spins and quit -- you have to think so fast and there's no crowd interaction. I mean, that's part of the fun, everyone rooting each other on...watching that wheel spin and excitedly watching the ball drop....so fun!

I agree about blackjack -- if you are a new or just casual player, the "serious" players can get really annoyed and I definitely don't like that.

The odds/recommendations change slightly, based on how many decks they are using. I have one for six decks, but it use it for all games.

The thing with basic strategy is you have to follow it exactly to get the benefit. If you vary (eg, stand on 16 this time, even though the card says to hit), you change the odds of being successful.

If you start getting ahead, increase your bets, as you are playing with house money. Also, remember to walk away when you are ahead. Otherwise, the odds are in the casino's favor that you will give it all back.

If you are staying at a casino, or even on a cruise ship, and you're new or slow at roulette, craps or blackjack, the best time to "practice" your playing is in the morning, when the casino is as empty as a graveyard. In fact, many casinos have lessons on the games in the morning. You just find a table with no players and tell the dealer you're new and just learning. Often they will slow down the game, offer tips to make your playing better, or at least not as intimidating, and also educate you on gambling ettiquette. That's a great time to practice using basic strategy.

With the card there is no studying. You look at what the dealer has, what you have, and bet accordingly. In most casinos the dealer is required to give you advice that matches basic play if you ask. They will tell you exactly what the cards do.
