When they closed the Western Casino in Las Vegas 5-6 years ago that was the last time I was in a casino. The Western was the last holdout for penny machines where you manually put one penny or 5 pennies in at a time. And when 600-700 pennies come down that chute, it was exciting as hell!
I refuse to play these electronic slot machines. No fun at all!
Count me in. I want to pull that lever.
But when we’ve gone to casinos it’s been to see the shows. We’ve seen the late Great Don Rickles and Debbie Reynolds and Rip Taylor. So we gamble TONS of money. Five bucks. I won $14 at a nickel slot machine. I quit.
Most Indian (native American) casinos allow smoking no matter which state because they have their own laws since they are considered to be part of the tribe's sovereign state, and the local smoking prohibitions don't apply there. Some do have smoke-free areas, but the ventilation is not totally sufficient to keep the smell out of those smoke free zones.
I live in Las Vegas and I think casinos are fun. I tend to spend my money at one casino at a time to get all the freebies. Once I get bored, I move on to a different casino and collect their freebies. I spend about $100 per month, my entertainment budget, and usually get $10 or 15 per week free play and something in the neighborhood of 8 free buffets per month. I see this return as being worth my initial investment.
I believe gamblers smoking is much higher than the general population. A governor in one state signed a bill making casinos smoke free and many gamblers went out of state.
Don't know where you are living... But if you like buffets, see if there is an Ameristar casino near your location. So far, I think they are the best casino buffets I have ever found. Great food, lots of variety.
No smoking is allowed in Colorado casinos (at least the ones in Blackhawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek; it might be allowed in the Indian casinos.) Some of the bigger casinos built smoking patios. I don't think most smokers leave the state to gamble; the casinos are still plenty crowded here.
Not in many years, though there are a few tribal casinos within 30 minutes with frequent headliners I consider seeing. The gambling rooms themselves don't appeal to me, but that is my issue.
Have spent a couple of very nice summer evenings on riverboats that do evening runs on the Mississippi River. They have casino licenses, with large gambling rooms but also big, open decks on top and are running boats (not the riverboats that are semi-permantly moored to a dock .... these go out most days/nights). Nice way to spend a summer evening.
I have more fun just chatting up some of the gamers. What a hoot some of them are...with their voodoo dolls or lucky amulets being waved at an electronic device. Wonder if they wave it at their phone if it will stop phone calls?
The layout of one of our casinos is a mouse trap....try to find the door to escape ! Its dern near impossible. Sure we have the Glowing EXIT signs that are regulated to be at the doors....but with all the other glaring signs its rather hard to see em!
I play slots and find it just silly to think that EACH spin is a win...so I keep the bets rather meager.....
I can play .06 cents and actually win 50.00$ My friends laugh when I tell em....Til they see it. Then they have stopped feeding the machines with max bet.
I do tend to stay away on college weekends ( when the kids are home on break). They tend to see casinos as the rauchy place to misbehave....(like college parties aren't enough?) . Like I said...it attracts all walks of life....
And there were a lot of women, especially, who had lied about where they were, or they'd go to the casino during the day when their husband was at work, desperately trying to win back money their husbands didn't know they'd lost.
People think of gamblers usually as being men, but I saw a lot of women gambling addicts. It's just so sad. I don't like to be around it. Plus, they're usually crowded, noisy and sometimes smoky, although more of them are going non-smoking.:-)

I had forgotten how desperate so many people look in a casino. Many seemed to look very serious and not too happy...not to mention the casino was filled with smokers which surprised me. I thought most people don't smoke anymore plus I didn't realize that it was still allowed since most places don't allow smoking. I also noticed a lot of older seniors, many with their walkers beside them playing.
We did try a few machines but the odds seem to be totally stacked against you. Not what I personally consider fun.
Visit any local casino during the day and you will see a ton of women sitting at slot machines!
