Not really. I think the best I had was a heated water bed. We have an adjustable memory foam bed now. There are a number of things that help a bad back, but just for a while. I’ve never found anything that helped much until I finally broke down about a year ago and had surgery. Best of luck to you, I know how much it sucks.
We tried several and so far Tuft and Needle mattress is working for me, along with daily back exercises. We rotate the mattress every couple of months. No hard core sales and ridiculous prices, in fact they only have two mattresses in the showroom and when we were ready to buy we got a discount because amazon was having a promo (they sell through amazon) that day. https://www.tuftandneedle.com/
I have chronic back issues and have to keep it under control, a bad mattress can make it worse, but a good mattress is essential part of back health maintenance. Best of luck
They look very interesting, Spuggy. Did you get the original or the Mint? And are you a side, back, or stomach sleeper?
I desperately need a new mattress but am waiting until we move in a couple of months.
I found a couple of other things on YouTube that I found helpful as a side sleeper: to place a pillow between my legs with my legs bent at a right angle, with another pillow under my feet and yet another pillow between my arms. All of that helps me to stay aligned and I feel much, much better in the morning.
_______
I do this too. Relieves pressure on the lumbar area and keeps arms and legs in alignment....
Has anyone who has started having back pain found a good mattress that seemed to help them?
I spent the whole day at the VA getting checked, and while I thought my older posturepedic was fine, the doc says that sleeping on my mattress is part of the problem. But he offered no opinion of what is a good mattress but I failed to ask. Should have.
So the question is for me to figure out what is a good mattress so I ask those with lower back pain. ( if it changes the answer arthritis is hitting everywhere and it hurts as I lie down. They upped my meds and did acupuncture but I would like to get at the cause not the symptoms.)
What kind of mattress do you use and does it help?
I am packing for a move so if a new kind of mattress seems like the best thing, I can not bother shipping the current mattress. Just pick one up there.
Mod feel free to move this if need be, I didn't see one specific to this in search. but could have missed it.
thanks
We have a 10+ year old posturepedic mattress too that I had to stop sleeping on because it kills me. I sleep on the couch; the cushions are perfect and I don't flip around at night. Sleeping on a regular bed I am all over the place which I feel is also part of my issue.
I've heard great things about sleep number beds. Tori Spelling bought one years ago when I used to watch Tori and Dean; they loved their bed back then. I don't know if they still have it.
Going to follow your thread to see what kind of replies you get.
Has anyone who has started having back pain found a good mattress that seemed to help them?
....
thanks
I definitely have some muscular related back pains & aches, not spinal issues thank God. Round about in my late 40's I had trouble sleeping. I got a Englander coil mattress & slept like a baby for the next 16+ years or so.
On a vacation I had to back out of a week-long stay at a budget BnB because the mattress was too firm, after 4-5 days my back muscles were so tight & painful I was barely able to tie my shoelaces or pick up anything from the floor. I visit my mother & her well-worn seat & sofa cushions sink down just enough that the same strain starts to happen to my lower back again. I have to grab a firm kitchen chair & put it in front of the couch to watch tv.
About 5+ years ago I stated to get some back aches from my Englander mattress after about 16+ years of good sleep. For an interim measure, while I looked at the bewildering array of mattresses out there, I bought a memory foam topper to lay on top of my mattress for up to a year, I understood they would last a year or 2, to shop around.
That was over 4 years ago & I'm still sleeping extremely well on my $150 memory foam topper! I can't believe it, it may only last another year or so but if I do the math: buy a new foam topper every 4-5 years @ $180 (today's price but they go on sale sometimes) that means $720 for 20 years. Most decent mattresses cost more than that & these days with the "no rotate" types dominating they are only expected to last 10-12 years. (The industry's way to speed up new purchases disguised as a convenience.)
Maybe I just got lucky with a sturdy foam topper, I don't know. I will get another though to replace it when needed. They carry them at that huge online merchant. The most important info is to get a sturdy one: 3" thick & 4lb density.
I have a Tempurpedic mattress and I hate it. It’s the Signature, which was discontinued. I also have the Cloud Prima. I have back pain all night from this mattress. Maybe I should try the latex. I would spend the money if it relieved my back pain.
Another upside to the 100% latex is that it doesn't require rotating or flipping over. I do NOT miss having to do that, as I did with the innerspring mattresses!!
It also does not develop indentations. It 'indents' when you are actually on it but then comes right back. Same for the pillow. I've had my mattress for 5 years and the general consensus is that the 100% natural latex ones should last for 15-25 years. Much longer than any of the other types.
By the way, a talalay mattress or pillow does not smell like rubber. I have probably the world's most sensitive sniffer and I could not detect even a whiff, even when the mattress was brand new. And I smell EVERYTHING! There is such a thing as "synthetic latex" which does off-gas or so I've read.
Thanks all for your comments. I will check back in frequently.
For now I will try to pillow work. and try to sleep on my back. And shop around the ideas. Since I will be moving in 2 weeks, expect to wait until I get to the new place to buy mattress.
Then again, if my back continues to hurt like it has today I may be sitting at the VA again on Monday.
New sympathy for those who suffered.
