As the title says, I am wondering how many of you feel like my husband and I do -- that as long as we have had enough to pay all our bills and expenses before we die, and to pay for our cremation and any leftover bills or estate expenses after we die, we couldn't care less if there would be nothing left in our savings account after that. (We have no relatives or charities we care enough about to affect this outlook.)
We do have a fairly large "cushion" in case of any major expenses or unexpected catastrophes, but once we are in our late 80's, should we live that long, I don't think that we would worry any longer about keeping that cushion -- or at least not nearly as much as we would when we were younger. Medicare and our supplemental Medicare plans would cover any major medical bills, and the sale of our paid-in-full house after our deaths would cover the ALF or nursing home reimbursement, if it comes to that.
(This thread was prompted by reading a thread in the Personal Finance forum that talks about accumulating a LOT more wealth than we would possibly ever need for our modest lifestyle.)
I don't care. I'm not on this earth to leave a nest egg for my survivors. I mean, if that happens fine, but that is not my goal. I want to have enough money to support myself through retirement and I'm sure I'll end up using it all. I'm not working my butt off to ensure that my surviving family receives a cash payout on me.
I cared several years ago, but after several more years reality has been revealed and now I really don't care any longer. It's damned if you do damned if you don't. One of us ends up in a nursing home for a year or two or three and all the savings will be gone and then. Well who knows.
hee hee I'm thinking of putting it all in my great grandmother's sterling silver tea set. I'll tell my kids that family heirlooms are valuable, very valuable! If they say they don't want it, I'll try one more time. After that, message received. Someone who shops at the Salvation Army will be very happy.
