I am 58 and really think about the years left until retirement. What say you?
I say it the right time to think seriously about it along with establishing a plan especially if you’re going to relocate.
I was the typical workaholic, loved my job but not the stress and thought I would be a fish out of water when retired.
Ironically, I found things to do that I enjoy and I absolutely love not having a job and I manage to keep busy all the time and doing things that I totally enjoy. I would have never guessed❗️
Like so many others, somewhere around 56/57. Still have a couple years to go assuming we don't have another market disaster. Trying to get my wife to discuss retirement homes, but she isn't ready to deal with it yet. While I'm so looking forward to retirement and not having to go to work every day, I think the thought kind of scares her, kind of like saying her best days are behind her. The kids are grown and on their own, and she's not "mommy" any more.
Started planning a specific date at 60, retired at 64 years and 7 months after 35 years at the same office.
WAY before 60 we had house paid for and no debit.
Wavered between 62 and 66 for Social Security purposes, decided to wait for SS till I am 70 or if I REALLY needed it so 66 was not a magic number.
Biggest concern was not financial, but "what am I going to do when I grow up?"... Still working on that after more than a year but enjoying being able to do nothing if I want to.
At around 58 for me. Was sitting in my annual review with my boss (who was great, btw). Asked me what my goals were for the next few years. I said "retirement". It was sort of a joke, but at that point I actually began checking into my pension payout amounts and what my SS would be at various retirement ages, and I ended up leaving at age 62. Might have stayed longer if that great boss had stayed around. Huge changes in management when I turned 60, whose primary goal seemed to be getting rid of anyone over the age of 30 pretty much decided it for me.
At 55 started counted the years
At 62 counted the months
At 64 counted the days
At 64.5 counted the hours,minutes,seconds
It was an easy task, had a retirement countdown clock as my home page on my work computer
I'll be 61 in May and I started the actual planning a few years ago. Got a financial planner, looked at the assets, and determined what we would need. The target date is when I turn 65, primarily because of Medicare. Could retire earlier, but the health insurance would eat up a lot of money each year and I don't want to risk it. We'll see how things pan out in the coming years.
