I will be getting a knee replaced next month and am debating about what direction (cooling machine or gel wrap or ice packs) to go with in keeping my knee iced. I was wondering what experience anyone had with icing their surgery/injury. Thanks.
I used ice packs several times a day. Had 2 packs and just rotated them. Icing isn't something you should do constantly. I thought the cooling machines were excessive.
Loved my cooling machine. Knee replacement was lousy. Pops and clicks to this day with every step. Clearly they did not get it right. I'll go to my grave with the other one.
I've known two people who recently had major surgery on the knee and ended up renting the cooling machine. Rave reviews over previous use of ice and gel packs.
I never used the ice machine so don't know about them. I did fine with my ice packs. had about 4 that I simply rotated. would seem though that the cooling machines are a lot more convenient.

I'm heading toward a knee replacement but I'm not there yet. When I had shoulder surgery several years ago I used an ice machine that not only circulated cold water but also provided compression. That definitely helped. My wife had a different shoulder surgery in February and the ice machine she had only circulated the cold water.

You're one of the lucky 4 out of 5. Reading on it AFTER the operation, seems about 20% are not happy with the results.
For example, I don't recall it being mentioned you may never be able to kneel again....putting any pressure on my knee cap brings tears to my eyes from pain. Really un-handy for a guy that was used to being down on the floor installing flooring, baseboards, etc.

Sorry to hear that your knee replacement did not go well. I know that surgery like this is always a bit of a gamble. Could I ask which cooling machine you used?

Not knee surgery but I've used a circulating chiller for several foot surgeries. Fantastic thing. The cooling was a lot more consistent than using ice packs, the circulation was better for the whole area than an ice pack, it was a lot less messy. I lived alone and didn't have to crutch back and forth to the kitchen to rotate packs as often during cycles. After using it for recovery I found all sorts of other uses for it. Still have it years later and use it occasionally for tendonitis. Yes, there's a gadget-geek factor there too.

That actually got better over time for me. initially I absolutely could not kneel, I can kneel know for short periods of time, like for yoga or floor exercises. If I'm in hte garden I definitely need a cushion if I'm weeding.
it will be interesting when I have 2 fake knees.
I was a runner previously so my surgeon definitely told me those days were down especially on city streets.
I do think many folks have "6 million dollar man" expectations. for example my surgeon made sure to tell me that I still have arthritis, a knee replacement doesn't magically heal that.
