I came to that realization a little later. The first day I went to work, I was ready to retire. Had to wait 37 years for it, though.

We invited my nearly twin sister and her husband to our house yesterday for the Fourth, and is becoming very common the discussions soon drifted to retirement. I was surprised to discover she is as apprehensive as I regarding this life change! She travels a lot, is a die-hard Half-Marathoner, and is addicted to Disney Parks; in addition to being an Oncology Nurse who speaks at National Conventions.

So I asked her why she thinks the two of us are so apprehensive regarding retirement. She stated she is convinced one reason is the very young age we each started working. Additionally her concerns include a fear of boredom, a fear her mind will turn to mush without the mental challenges of her job, and a fear that planning for 30 years of future financial needs is beyond the capabilities of any forecasting tool.

And I thought maybe it was genetic rather than behavioral based.

Well, some of us have rather important jobs, in science, medicine, etc. that we enjoy, at least to some extent. I'm in that camp.

The other side of the coin is that there are a lot of things I want to do with the time I am now spending on the job - one of which is to work out more and get back into better physical shape.
