I am wondering if people of retirement age feel that they have progressed in personal development over the years, or if you had no interest in self-actualization or self-awareness.
As a Christian there is a self examination that goes on all the time.
David said ," Search me Oh God and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
I believe that it is important to have something to show for in my life both in my own productivity and helping others to live and find their way with a relationship with God Jesus provides .
This has always been my primary interest in life that has never changed though I have had many different jobs and positions.
In off times I have more than enough to do the demand is staggering sometimes ,and sometimes escape doing some engineering and building tools that help me along the way.
I love learning new skills and developing better ways to accomplish projects , I will even invest in building things just for the education . the ram pump is a good example .
I have a mind set that if something had been done 100 years ago I should be capable of doing it my self. I since have expanded that to" if something is being done in a third world country I should be capable of doing it my self. "
Not that I need it but that in the event some one does, I have the experience to share. Which as already occurred .
Ignorance is not bliss , but vegetation is suicide .

You can progress in personal development with lack of self awareness. I don't really understand the question as it is worded.
Plus lots of people think they are self aware, and they really do not appear to be to others.

???? People continue to grow throughout their lives, whether they have an interest in self-actualization or not.
If I'm understanding the question correctly, then yes I have definitely come to understand myself better at an 'older age' than I did when younger. Or perhaps it's that I eventually came to acknowledge those things (and motivations) to myself. Probably a bit of both. But it wasn't a conscious decision, it was a gradual thing that came as a result of things that happened over the years. I never had a conscious need to "find myself", as the saying was back in the 1960s. Never felt that I had to search out some sort of "meaning of life" or "reason for my existence."
Eventually I realized that when I was younger I too often tried to remake myself, for the wrong reasons. Now at my age I have come to accept myself as I am, for the right reasons.
I have always been the type to analyze and question most things, but mostly myself (probably too much).
However, the older I get, the more resistant I am to new attitudes and new technology, -- I actually HATE new technology and the way most things are today in the U.S., politically speaking -- so I am imaging myself almost being a shut-in once I fully retire in an attempt to keep the modern world out of my life as much as possible. This might sound very sad or terrible to most people, but as I am an introvert, I don't think that would bother me as much as it would most people.
Anyway, I truly do wish there were no new inventions after about 1995 or so. (Btw, I own nothing that was invented after 1995 by choice, although I have had replacements for pre-1995 electronics.) However, if they would cure cancer and dementia, end pollution and war, etc., I would change my mind about what I just wrote -- but I just don't see any of that happening any time soon, and probably not in my lifetime.

The are currently testing a vaccine for alzheimers. I think lots of progress is made in these areas, just not as fast as one would like (we are not a patient society). Lots of things are being done about pollution, though the US maybe taking half a step the wrong way.
War? Yeah, don't see that one going away.
I DO love most new tech!

And maybe some are so self-aware that they aren't aware of any others!
