Yes, sounds like an arrears payment for a recalc of earnings. Your monthly benefit may go up a bit as well. This happened to me a year after I retired. Benefit was increased and a one-time back payment was deposited.

The government giveth and the government taketh away. If they mistakenly paid you this amount, hang onto it.....they'll be there with their hands out eventually.

For god's sake don't touch it until you find out why.

When you authorize Social Security to make deposits, you also simultaneously authorize them to make withdraws.

If they make an over-payment or error, they will reach into your account and pull that money out.

If it's a legitimate deposit, you should be able to go on-line and look at your account and the deposit will be recorded there if it's proper, and will probably say what it is.
