We all go through the pages of life, it is inevitable. What would you say has been the worst event/thing that has happened to you (or spouse) since you retired? Any good come of it?
I'll start --
So far, the worst thing that has happened to me (us) has been my Hubby being diagnosed with Alzheimer's at age 64. It threw a wrench into everything right at the beginning. The good things, so far, are that I have made some warm and caring new friends, and we have an excellent clinic where he goes for medical care. And it forced us to see a very good lawyer to make sure wills/trusts were in order.
My husband passed away when I'd been retired for 5 years. He was actually the reason I retired -- he'd become disabled and ill with progressing Parkinson's, so I retired to stay at home with him. I'm glad I did -- we had five good years together between my retirement and his passing.
In addition to losing my husband, I lost his pension, and of course his Social Security check, so my income is now 1/3 what it was when he was alive. None of this came as a surprise, but it sure made me make changes in my life.
In 2003, when my present husband and I got together (I was a widow) he let me know that his life plan was to retire some place “west.” As time went on, we traveled many places together to find a compromise retirement venue. And so we moved to Las Vegas. And its a great place to retire. And we still maintain a residence in Dallas. So I sound a bit spoiled but the move has placed me so very distant from family and friends. Yes, we have settled in and I like the new place and we’ve met some great people and have joined in some fun groups. And I can catch a plane back to Dallas (and do) when I want. But sometimes it really hurts my heart not to be able to just get in the car and go watch a quick basketball game with my gkid playing, or grab a quick lunch with my son.....

You should still qualify for your late spouse’s SSI. Call the Social Security administration to discuss with them.
Hip replacement in 2010 at 72 and left with too too many crippling complications. Otherwise I'm great -- lost some people but that's out of my control.
Lost my husband in 2015. No one to grow old with now.
You are not alone, we have to learn to roll with the punches. I divorced over 40 yrs ago and chose never to marry again and I'm good with my decision. Do it my way and count my blessings and good memories.
