I come from a long line of folks with heart disease which is why I retired at 62. By God, I wanted SOME of my social security and federal retirement.

Entering my second year of retirement and if I croak tomorrow, I have enjoyed ever flippin' minute of it.

I am 62 and have been sitting at a desk 8+ hours a day since I was 27. I really feel like if I keep working I will die in a few years. Physical labor takes a toll on your body, but so does sitting.

Default ...relationships...

As some of you may recall, I retired 31DEC2017. By the Summer of 2018, if there is something that needs to be done or I can visit someone, the visit takes priority. All the time.

I used to work with an African American guy, Don Stokes. His theory was, since AA people don't live as long as caucasian people, he was going to retire at 62 so he got some of his SS back, and had retirement time.

He retired at 62, but I lost track of him. No idea how he's doing, but it's a good theory.

My physician told me yesterday that a 61 year old male nonsmoker non-diabetic with normal cholesterol levels has a 9.3% chance of having a heart attack. It’s up over 10% at age 62. I have a brand new Lipitor Rx even though I don’t have a cholesterol issue. I’ve already been eating baby aspirin for a decade to lower stroke risk. I’m not hypertensive but we had the discussion about moving to something stronger at age 65. My father had vascular dementia and was pretty out of it by age 80 from mini strokes. No thanks. I’m doing what I can to lower my heart attack and stroke risk but it can get anyone once they get beyond 60 no matter how fit they are.

I thought mini aspirin doesnt work anymore, there’s a recent study on that. I know my brother whose a doctor told me that a long time ago. But as usual I ignored him and now the study confirms it.

The last person I remember doing CPR on outside of work was the 62 year old owner of the gym I was a member of. This guy was an athlete since he was a kid, played college football, then after college went on to be a gym teacher and coached several sport as well was a many year 1/2 marathon runner. He was riding on the stationary bike next to me when he collapsed so I was able to start CPR immediately on him. The paramedics were there in minutes intubated him quickly and then followed the ACLS protocol for the next 1/2 hour but this intervention could not save his life.

Yes, these fatal cardiac events can happen to the fit, but not all have to be fatal. And this is the reason I am a huge advocate for having more and more people CPR trained which I am instructor, and additionally have more AEDs within the community because both have saved lives that would not have been saved without these interventions.

I say instead of giving your loved one next Valentine's Day chocolates, flowers, dinners, etc. give them instead the gift of you getting CPR trained because there is no better gift than you having the skills that may very possibly one day save your loved one's life.
