The list at the end is weird - no US states were in the top 49.

I am curious if anyone actually makes a decision to move to another state because of an article like this?

Well your worst state might be my favorite state, as your favorite state is probably my worst state. Good and bad in everyplace. These lists, made up by 20 somethings sitting in their New York coffee shops, amuse me.

Also note their careful methodology:
Quote:
OUR METHODOLOGY: We added each state's retirement ranking from Bankrate, Wallethub and Kiplinger to create scores out of a possible 150. The higher the score, the worse the state is for retirees.
or, more bluntly - "we read a couple articles on other sites and combined their results"

Sure.

In 2000, I was stationed in Italy. At that time, we had owned homes in California, Scotland, Connecticut, and in Washington. And we had lived in Virginia, SC and Florida. I was rapidly approaching my retirement from the US Navy. We frantically searched every magazine article that we could find trying to decide where we wanted to settle when we returned stateside.

We made our decision to settle in Maine, without ever previously visiting Maine.

It worked out okay for us.

These lists are misleading as each individual has certain criteria for retirement. Financial, culture, hobbies, family, friends, climate, distance from family...so it depends what is important to the person. I have friends who retired to a state where there were lower taxes and no state income tax and they moved back within five years. Many times the death of a spouse will require the surviving spouse to move closer to family.

People move from the Boston area to Rhode Island to save money. There are loads of small towns that are fairly cheap. Anyway, Rhode Island is wonderful if you like the ocean--there's ocean everywhere and the beaches are beautiful. Providence, the capital, has lots of culture. I considered retiring to Rhode Island.
