Nursing is one of the jobs that robots can't do.

It seems quite strange to suggest that immigrants are required to do nursing jobs. If there were no immigrants, people would just die in their beds? Makes no sense. Is nursing beneath ordinary Americans?

I typed out a longer post but decided it is too early on a Sunday morning to attempt to explain how the situation in Maine is to someone who doesn't live here.

Shorter reply: Having family nearby is NO guarantee that an elderly person will be kindly or properly cared for by a family member. Living in an urban area does not guarantee access to better quality health care. And finally, perhaps we should first focus money and resources on improving conditions for our country's foster children and our elderly and disabled veterans before donating cars, smartphones, and free education, health care, and legal services to immigrants who have not legally set up residence in the U.S.

We are discussing daily care of seniors which is not the same as real nursing, like in a hospital. Daily care of seniors means dealing with dementia and adult diapers in large part. It is often not only difficult but unpleasant work which nobody really wants to do. Immigrants do it because they are not trained for other more pleasant and well paying work, but believe me, they want better work for their children. Many many Americans care for their parents themselves as they age. There are many people in their 60's caring for their parents who are in their 80's. Basically, people are living longer and their needs present a challenge that is not easily.

Nursing isnít but CNA generally is. A BSN in a hospital is very different from a CNA in a nursing home.

Note, this is not the place to debate immigration, legal or illegal. There is a sub-forum for that.

Americans by and large don't want these jobs. Something to think about.
You don’t take into account cultural differences: hygiene standards, etc.
Ever seen undercover cameras in the hotels- where the foreign born maid wipes the guest’s drinking glasses with the dirty towels she just used on the toilet?
I think there is a thread here somewhere on a questionable residential maid service.
Some are very cruel to people’s suffering- as they have seen worse or have racial prejudice
We don’t think about cultural differences at all when we invite people from different countries, where the survival depends on not obeying the law
In the Netherlands they have “ culture” classes for immigrants, where the boys are taught to shake hands with female teachers, legal system explained, behavior in public, expectations, etc

Whatever happened to humanity?

Love others like you love yourself?

Where would all of us be if someone didn't give us a chance? Not everyone is cut from the same cloth.

There are PLENTY of instances of our fellow Americans abusing elder patients in hospital or in home care, so stop blowing your smoke.

That said, as one who has worked in hospitals and nursing education, you cannot practice in most states without taking the NCLEX and passing state boards. That was the case back in the 1980ís when nurses from the Philippines came to work at a teaching hospital I worked at in San Francisco....and continues today here in California and most states.

If you experience bad care in nursing facilities by non licensed staff it is because corporate healthcare does not want to pay for experienced and credentialed nurses.

Leverage your anger at them and those who want to strip regulations that require higher standards.
