I know I shouldn't but ever since the HBO special I've been thinking about Chernobyl and the Exclusion Zone. Apparently the place is overrun with tourists and tours these days. To do the entire tour takes about 11 hours, they say. Wear closed toe shoes because you'll be stepping on broken glass. Oh, and take a roll of toilet paper since there is none on site. And bottled water.
It would be a different kind of vacation, that's for sure.
I have never been to a country where Russian is spoken but there are many places where it is spoken I want to visit. Just this week I was pricing travel to Kiev. I am aware of Chernobyl tourist opportunities and might consider it if in the area. There are many places in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia I would like to visit but nothing really imminent.
There will always be residual radiation. Go at your peril.
The more dangerous radionuclides will have been greatly reduced, but half lives are only that. Start with a HUGE number and even a thousand half-lives later there will be some that remain or are converted to other radioactive forms. If you go, wear a radiation detecting badge that you can have analyzed later if something medical happens. You might only detect a couple types of radiation but at least that's something.
I saw the HBO series on Chernobyl and have no desire to go. However there are a LOT of places that I would like to go visit that I have never been to yet....lots right here in the US and many in Europe.
At 65 and still in good health (me) I hope to visit many of them but I realize that I won't get to see everyplace on my list due to cost & the fact that my husband is in poor health.
Considered but no plans yet: Spain - specifically the regions along both coasts; Malaysia; Japan; UK countryside; Evora/Alentejo Portugal; Albanian coastline; San Miguel de Allende. I hope I live that long.
Tons of them! I'd like to see Australia and New Zealand. I'd love to visit Switzerland, and I will probably within a few years. I'd like to spend time in Greece, Santorini especially, and also The Amalfi coast in Italy. All will someday come to pass I'm sure. I just have to be patient. I don't want to do it all at once and then get burnt out on travel, or overspend. With careful planning I can get some of the airfare paid through travel points.
Next BIG trip will be Alaska next summer. Small trips in between may include the Bahamas this winter.
I can't fathom wanting to see Chernobyl, and I used to work at a nuclear power plant.
