Turned 67 today. First birthday since retirement and in the pandemic. Underwhelming at best. Away from family and friends and no birthday cake...lol. We are scheduled to go to the coast this weekend, but the air quality levels from the CA fires are still very poor. Bleh. How was your pandemic birthday?
I have not had a pandemic B-day yet. DH`s B-day was last month. It was our first time going out to eat, in the pandemic. We sat outside, on the water, and had his favorite....oysters on the half shelf. It was very nice, we were given hand santizer, before we sat down, given paper menu`s, and our server wore a face mask. Very enjoyable.
Birthday cards, online birthday wishes, a little gift from dh, and that was it. I didn't want to go out to eat and now it's been a while so I don't even remember what we ate. At our age we really don't do birthdays anyway, very scaled down. So it was really no different. We could have gotten take out or we could have eaten outdoors if I had wanted to. If I had family around and couldn't invite them, it would have been different.
My B-day is tomorrow. My family no longer knows when anyone birthday is. Daily I do caregivng for two disabled relatives whom do not live with me. Tomorrow I will try to find an hour for myself to do something different than normal activities so I can enjoy part of my day. My mom hasn't known my birthday in years now. I don't tell her anymore because she'll feel bad she doesn't have a gift for me. With her worsening health; birthdays just aren't the same anymore. I hope others have good birthdays despite the pandemic.
I don't believe in making a special deal out of birthdays. I find it silly and childish for adults.
I do not understand the concept of birthday as "my special day".
I feel that birthdays as a 'special day' are for children and teenagers.
It is an indoctrination concept - if every adult had not been indoctrinated with the 'birthday concept', it would not occur to many adults to mark it as some sort of 'special day'.
I think sending birthday cards in the mail is fine.

I'm sorry it was such a paltry birthday for you. My b-day was a few days ago. I too turned 67.
No birthday cake. DH was more than willing to pick one up at Whole Foods but we are still living in separate buildings out of an abundance of caution, so we couldn't figure out how to get the cake to me when it was 110 degrees plus outside. Normally he leaves non-perishable things for me next to the back door overnight, but the cake would have been a puddle of goo in the morning.
Next month will be cooler. I'm looking forward to fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, and a birthday cake. Also planning ahead for Thanksgiving dinner.
I had a wonderful 70th. birthday, cards and video calls from family and friends. My husband prepared a favorite meal, we had a good champagne and a yummy (delivered) bakery birthday cake. I received several unexpected presents, my favorite is a Brahmin weekender carryall from my husband. Sadly I won’t be able to use it until this plague is over. We love to celebrate Birthdays with family and friends. We did the best we could with the circumstances and I had a lovely day.
I turned 69 a few weeks ago, went out to eat with relatives, then last Sunday had a big family BBQ.
