Hurricane—that’s it, Florida is off the list. As a New Yorker I’ve always placed Florida on the top of my retirement home search list. In fact I have a another visit to Tampa area already planned in a couple months. But with this major hurricane headed to Florida I can only think living there is too much of a stress and hassle. Time to look for less greener pastures, I guess. Hard to give up the dream. These more frequent and stronger storms I believe are the result of climate change...and I don’t see that issue being addressed. Any advice as to where to move that doesn’t require hurricane shutters, evacuations and weeks with electricity?

Budget?Preferences? Near beach/ocean? Anywhere on the East Coast/Southeast is prone to storms. Anything further up (south Jersey/Cape Cod is less prone, but colder water and much more expensive.
Me, I retired to mountain Colorado from Boston. No interest in anything like Florida, but wanted sunnier drier winters.
I have relatives in FL and was there for Hurricane Wilma. Wow, it really does tear everything up. Gas stations can't pump gas (the power is out..... for a long time). Stores close. A lot of trees in the road, so driving around is difficult.
But when it's sunny and beautiful, traffic is horrible. I would not enjoy driving around and I can't imagine making turns. Some one-way streets are 4 lanes across.....so going from right lane to left lane can be tricky.
Just my opinion.
The hurricane is only one issue. Hot and humid and buggy is way bigger and frequent. Some of the nation's worst health care also comes to mind. Then there is the culture.....
That's just one of the reasons why we're moving to Door County (Wisconsin). They have had a very nasty tornado and one devastating fire (in 1876), but that's about it for natural disasters.

I would probably be fine with the culture, but that humidity thing would be a bummer.
Some friends of mine have a couple of beach houses in Florida. While out of town at their primary house elsewhere, the A/C broke. The neighbors mentioned it a month or two later.
The result was having to re-drywall, etc. a cheaply built home. No thanks.
OTOH, I can see the joy of a beach. It would be interesting to either have a valueless home (ie. a trailer) or a completely bulletproof one (flood-proof, hurricane-proof, watch the storm with a drink in hand and the generator humming).
