No loss of smell for me (only 60). I have always had a super sniffer, sometimes I think a loss of smelling would be a blessing. I can smell B.O. on a person from 6 feet away. :^(
I once temporarily lost my sense of smell, thanks to trying to clean an oven in a rental house.
It looked like someone had cooked beef roasts in it and never cleaned it. I had already tried cleaning it the usual manual ways. The thing had a self-cleaning function that turned out to create noxious fumes. The fumes choked us and lingered for a long time, bad enough. Worse yet, my sense of smell got clobbered. It took weeks to return. I was very worried during that time.
I will NEVER use any self-cleaning oven function again!
I lost my sense of smell (and taste, of course) for well over a year after a bad bout of bronchitis. I only got it back after seeing a Quantum Energetics practitioner, who diagnosed a swelling of one of my nerves. My ability to smell things came back gradually after she did energy work on me over the course of several weeks. I first noticed when I stepped into the shower one day and could again smell the soap. I was so glad to get it back.
Prior to that, I had tried some website's suggestion of sniffing four different essential oils several times a day. IIRC, they were Clove, Lemon, Peppermint, and Patchouli. The four very different aromas were supposed to "wake up" my sense of smell, but sadly, it didn't work for me. Worth a try, though, I suppose.
If anyone can get to a Quantum Energetics practitioner for whatever ails them, I highly recommend it. It works.
I thought I had very poor "smell" over the last couple of years. I started noticing however a smell in office about six months ago and when I complained I was told no one else could smell it. Then a few weeks ago our company put some people to work in a small adjoining office and first thing the people complained about the smell. I felt so vindicated... and also relieved that apparently my sense of smell is apparently intact.
Yes, I cannot even smell a skunk. I believe it to be genetic as the same happened to my sister. I am 68, it started declining when I was about 60 and by the time I was 65 it was 90% gone.
I lost my sense of smell about seven years ago. Then I had sinus surgery to remove polyps. Once the swelling went down, my ability to smell returned.
But polyps almost always grow back and so did mine. I lost my sense of smell (again) two years ago.
A few months ago, my ENT roto-rootered the polyps (the growth wasn't as extreme this time) and I was able to smell again a few days later.
A really interesting thing happened the first time smell disappeared. I started randomly "smelling" phantom scents like baking bread or cookies. I assume my brain was starved for olfactory input, so it invented some from memory.
I never stopped being able to taste things, BTW. It just wasn't a complete taste.
