My 14yo Sister was to young to enter a contest where they were giving away a car so she wrote my name down. I had a call one day saying I won a Toyota which I thought was a crank call.

Perfect timing because I had just gotten married and still in school. I drove the car for about 4 years or so and then gave the car to her.

I made my first husband a costume for a Halloween party. This was back in the late 80's and ZZ Top was popular. I made him a ZZTop costume with the beard, hat, etc, and a spinning white fur guitar just like in the music video. He took first place, but really I won since I made it, he just wore it.

DH, a little farm boy in the mid-fifties, won a local milk-drinking contest. When asked by the news reporter how he could drink so much milk he answered, "Our cow went dry."

I have a trophy about 18" high with a little gold car on top, handed to me by British Race Car Driver Jackie Stewart in 1970 when I won the British Week Car Rally in San Francisco with my 1967 Cortina GT. It was first place in my class.

Back in 1996-ish, the Web was just getting started and some companies were eager to drum up business by running contests.

What they didn't realize was most people weren't on the Internet then. I entered every contest I could find online. I won an AM/FM headphone radio, a set of dishes from an early "online mall" (remember those?) and the biggie, an adventure trip to Baja California for two weeks to explore the region by boat, camp out on the beaches under the stars and have meals prepared for us. All expenses paid.

We didn't go. We had already booked a trip to the UK and we only had a few weeks' vacation.

You had a Cortina? Was it British racing green?

When I was a kid my sister took me to a carnival at school. Of course there were magic acts and I won a rabbit. Mom was so "thrilled" but let me keep it.
