That's similar to the criteria that I use. If I'm down to two or three favorites, I imagine them all being shown on different stations at the same time and I can only choose one to watch. That's the one that goes on my list.

As for musicals, I included quite a few in my list including The Music Man, which you must have overlooked. One of the other musicals I listed was My Fair Lady for 1964, which is the same year that Mary Poppins came out, so if you like both musicals, you have to choose between the two. And while I love Guys and Dolls as you do, it came out in 1955, the year before I was born, so it was ineligible for my list.

See, it's a lot harder than you think to compose a list of favorite movies when you can only choose one for each year. Try it yourself and see.
That's me, the rebel.

That doesn't work for me because it depends on my mood. Btw, this thread was fairly easy* and fun for me because as I said, I keep my movies listed on an Excel spreadsheet, and periodically (about twice a year, on average), I revise my Top 100 favorite movies list, and it surprises me how my Top 100 will change. For example, some movies (and I am talking older ones as well as newer ones) might have been in the low 20's teens when I first compiled the list about five or ten years ago, but might now be in the high 40's -- or vice versa!

In fact, when I just started to take the movies from my Top 100 for this thread, it had been at least six months (maybe a year) since I last looked at it, and I found myself shaking my head and wondering why in the world I had put Movie A ahead of Movie B!

*The only really time-consuming part was researching the years the movie was released, and some years I had NO movies on my list at all, so I had to Google, for example, "Top 1954 movies.". Other years I had at least ten movies for that year -- 1963 had the most, I think, but I was greatly surprised how many of my favorites were released from 1990-2009! Anyway, great thread and a very fun and interesting one for me!!

So which one is it going to be for you? Forbidden Planet or The Ten Commandments?

You can only choose one.
I can't decide. 1973 is a tough year. The Exorcist, American Graffiti, The Sting, Soylent Green, The Way We Were, Paper Moon, and The Paper Chase were all released that year. It's not quite Sophie's Choice, but I can't bring myself to do it.

It was tough for me to decide which one is my most favorite for 1993 and 1994:

1993: Three colours: Red, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Piano, The Remains of The Day, Jurassic Park and Schindler's List

1994: Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Three colours: White, Three colors: Blue and Shawshank Redemption.

I chose Schindler's List and Shawshank Redemption simply because there were some scenes in them which etched deeper in my memory! It was very difficult for me not to select one of the Three Colours films of my favorite movie director, Krzysztof Kieślowski. I did choose his other films Dekalog: The Ten Commandments (1989) and The Double Life of Veronique (1991). I highly recommend watching all of his films.

I just remembered a movie from 1998 which knocks out my pick(s) for that year. So for 1998 I'm changing my favorite to The Cowboy and the Movie Star. It was a very good made for TV movie with Sean Young and Perry King that I could watch again and again.

And good grief, what's wrong with me? My favorite movie for 1992 was Medicine Man with Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco. How could I have forgotten that movie? Well, it was late at night when I actually compiled the list, so. . .

List your favorite film of every year since the year you were born!
Your favorite is not necessarily the one you think is best...

List ONLY ONE film per year. This is harder than it looks.

While compiling my list, I was surprised at how many times I went with personal favorites over the more obvious "great" films of the year...
