What would you say to an 18 year old you?
None of it was your fault, Kid. What happened to you would have happened to who ever was standing in your shoes when it all came down. You didn't do anything wrong.
You're smart. And you'll be able to figure it out as you go. Look for opportunity and when it comes along, go for it!
And if you ever get confused, just take out your notepad and write down your thoughts as fast as they occur to you. Keep writing until the way forward appears.
Best of luck, Kid! I'll be thinking of you always.

I should say "stay out of the pool hall and study." I did neither and got drafted during the Vietnam era. Worked out OK, though. I stayed in the states for two years, got two college degrees on the GI bill, bought my first house with a VA loan, and now the VA takes care of all my medical needs.

Instead of "stay out of the pool hall and study" I would have to say "keep doing what you are doing, kid, you'll do fine."

Don't listen to your boyfriend who says skip the workplace savings plan. Put something in the workplace retirement plan, even if it's not much. The (now ex) boyfriend still lives like a college student out of necessity in old age (much older than me). I'm somewhat financially comfortable, but would be much better off had I started saving sooner.

Oh, yeah. Good one. My specific variation on that would be "Don't drink soda. Ever".

Or the body, and if you do, make sure it's buried deep enough so the dog won't dig it up.

That can be a long list. I made a lot of dumb mistakes.

Get a college degree. Doesn't make you any smarter but gives you a lot more options.

Partying is not a career choice. Stay sober. Getting smashed should be a rare thing, if at all.

Start saving NOW for the future. Anything can happen any time. Save and learn to invest. Then you will have some income you don't have to sweat for.

Learn all you can at your job, even if it isn't your lifelong choice. Do your best to do it well while you are there.

Help your friends when you can but don't let their problems become your problems. Don't hang out with people who are unstable. Avoid people who are always involved in foolish conflicts.

Buy gold and hold on to it. Get a trade or govt job with the water dept. Follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
