It’s not carbs, my youngest child lost 40 lbs but she had pancakes and waffles sometimes. It’s portion control and get more exercise.

This thread motivated me to try a fast day, I made it till 7:30 PM until I caved and bought a small Thai salad at Panera. I'll try to go all the way Friday. I felt very tired from not eating, but my body should adjust.

We might have all been drinking so the numbers could be off a little.

Old Boss is still alive so maybe he is right..
I saw a report this week that each beer takes fifteen minutes off your life. If that's true, I'd have been dead as a baby

Eat chicken soup. Wear a hat and boots when it's cold and rainy. Wash your hands before you eat. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Stop eating dinner well before your butt starts to resemble a three-row corn picker. Find a purpose in life that's bigger than you are. Life is movement. Don't sweat the petty stuff, and remember to pet the sweaty stuff.

Per Gloria Trillo in "The Sopranos":
"The first noble truth is, life is suffering. But the Buddha preached, Joyful participation in the sorrows of the world".
Good advice.

Johnny Carson was speaking with a guest one evening, and related a story. He said,
"I knew a guy once who never smoke, didn't drink, didn't gamble, came home early every night, never chased women, watched his diet closely, and always exercised. He was the healthiest guy I ever knew, right up until the time he shot himself".

I guess the moral is, "Everything in moderation, even good things".

Your thoughts?
In terms of longevity, DNA is key.

I am sure we all know some stories of people who "abused" themselves, not beyond a breaking point of course, and still lived to upper 80s-90s.

What helps is moderation in everything, including diet, stress management, exercise, mental stimulation, etc.

I remember reading about 20 years ago that DNA (genes), barring freak accident, determines how long you live give or take 5-10 years. Whether one reaches the far end or exceeds that expected span depends on those other factors as listed above, and lifestyle will also significantly influence the quality of life in the last five years or so.

Sounded reasonable to me then, still sounds reasonable.

So first order of business is to know the health history of parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents if possible.

But more important than all that is feeling good TODAY, not in some unknowable future. To me, that means moderation in everything (see above). So, either way, I figure I can't lose.

All the best!

My wife and I visit her regularly. We help her out with things in her home. I take her trash out each week. My daughter will go over during the week and spend time with her.

Wow, that is some way to think about things. Tell me how many people eating a snickers bar are getting the same benefits that an apple can give them.

All natural. Check out the first article and go from there.

Since you did bring it up and I am interested in learning, I wondered what are the benefits of eating candy.

"Studies show that consuming sugar makes people perservere longer on difficult task, better able to focus, and more likely to delay gratification."

Interesting that someone did a study on the benefits of eating something with sugar in it. I am wondering though, since sugar has benefits, maybe wouldn't it be better to eat an apple and get all those benefits from the sugar in an apple and all the other benefits that an apple can give you?

Oh no, go straight to the source. Sugar is so good for you it’s best consumed by the spoonful, or mixed into a syrupy beverage. That apple will just make you flatulent and bulk up your stool.

How many fat people do you know that choose an apple over a snickers bar? At work we routinely have trays of fruit and trays of donuts in the morning. Always plenty of fruit left at the end of the day but few to no donuts.

Candy makes you want to eat more candy. Fruit does not have the same effect.
