Living on a 100 acre parcel, and living within a short commute to a hospital are not mutually exclusive.
We live in the center of a 42 acre parcel with river frontage, across the road we manage a 105 acre parcel; both are forest land. And we live 20 miles from a teaching hospital.

When I lived in NY State, I lived on a public golf course. There was zero noise (except for crickets) because I was so far from any road. The apartments were all one level and the two bedroom apartments were only on the ends of the buildings (there were several). That meant that unless you lived in the apartment next door to the two bedroom, your chance of living next to children was zero.
When I moved to MD, I discovered on the other side of the woods that my bedroom window faced was the road the fire department went down to get to the main road for all fires. It took a few months but pretty soon I didn't hear the sirens anymore even though the fire department still used that road. I don't know why that is but I imagine that people who live in major cities also learn to tune out certain noises.
Luckily, I've never had a problem with barking dogs. The only outdoor noises I hear now are geese right before the sun goes down and song birds right as the sun comes up. To me, the most annoying sound is a cricket inside your home.

I absolutely DESPISE those booming stereos! Every time one goes by, I can hear it, feel it, for maybe a mile, since they are SO loud. I wish that they were never developed - when we were kids, all we had was a little tinny transitor radio that WE couldn't even hear ourselves!
Technology is a big problem, because they invent things that are NOT good, IMO. Who ever wanted to be forced to hear someone else's music? Not me. I don't make people listen to mine. I was brought up to be considerate; apparently, not the case with many people.
I live in a city of about 40,000, in a fairly quiet neighborhood (except the summers when the boombox cars go by to the local park). I think one of the most important things to look for in a neighborhood is NO apartments. If the houses are single-family or condos (like mine), they are owner-occupied and people seem to care more about the neighborhood. If you have apartments that might have students, or other young people, who are moving in and out all the time, you just never know who's going to move in from one month to the next. You can get some real doozies.

Me too.
I'd like to shoot the man who invented subwoofers....all they do is make that horrible music vibrate. Very annoying to apartment renters.

That kind of "music" should only be for concert halls, not riding around in a car. I always had trouble with people over the years in apartments where I lived. The worst thing about it was that they thought that *I* was being unreasonable in asking for quiet, instead of THEM being unreasonable and inconsiderate!
There's a way to play that stuff so that it doesn't bother others - inside, there are earphones, in cars, keep it down and close your windows. But, lots of people these days don't give a rat's ass who they bother. What an upside-down world we live in, when we've allowed all this garbage and lost any kind of neighborly consideration.

I agree.
Though I had rather assumed that the loud car stereo fad had already gone and faded away.
It has been years since I heard one.
I do recall how annoying they were though.

Let these kids blast that awful music to earthquake level, when they get older they'll all be deaf.
I think now's the time to invest in hearing aids. You'd die a multi-millionaire

I hope only death takes me from our quiet home in the middle of our twenty acres of woods.

The booming subwoofers...that's my number 1 complaint (barking dogs are a pretty close 2nd). I, too, wish they had never been invented. It sounds like you and I were raised with the same rules. Consideration and respect for other people seem to have diminished over the years...unless it's just my perspective as I age.
We don't have any apartments near us but there seem to be lots of booming car stereos everywhere you go in this city.
forest beekeeper...if Maine wasn't so far from the rest of our family, it sounds like I should take a trip up to Argyle. That sounds like my kind of place.
