It's going to be hard to pick just one. First I would say you want a state that's as close to you as possible so you don't need to fly or drive a long ways. I see you are in California. I'd pick AZ as it is just next door. Other states to pick out west would be New Mexico and California. Some cities in CA have become cheaper so it's possible to find a place for a reasonable price if you look around. New Mexico has a lot of cities with a low cost of living.
CA real estate is dropping. You probably can find two areas within CA that are reasonable. But snowbirding does not make sense here, at least to me, since you can find areas of CA without weather extremes year round. Are most snowbirds finacially secure? Does it not make sense if you have to retire on a budget? I'm trying to get a sense of what snowbirding is all about.
Quite a few of the snowbirds I know or have met here in AZ go back to WA, Oregon or CA. We would love to buy a small house in WA to go to during the heat of the summer.
Thanks for the tip on Utah. And MotleyCrew, I'm assuming is not eastern WA or OR. Doesn't it get hot during summer in that half of those states?
You are right about the heat. The people we have met that have second homes in WA are on the coast, near Seattle. The Oregon people are in Bend, which does get hot, but not as hot as we get. We are also seeing quite a few Canadians lately.
I'd definely say that Florida by far of any state I have visted. In south florida seems almost very one is from a northern states. Here in Texas it seems liuke their coming from Californioa in droves the last few years.

Why does snowboarding in California not make sense? There are plenty of top notch places in Tahoe. You can buy a place in South Lake Tahoe for less than $250K. There are plenty of condos for sale for less than that.
I know Colorado has low taxes but the mountain towns are extremely expensive. What about Idaho?
