NO, I never read "leisureville" but YES, I have been participating on TOTV forum for one year, and have learned a lot from the small percentage of The Villages participants on that forum - especially that it is a very unique community. On the forum, there seems to be a handful of singles who love to party and are very enthusiastic about their lifestyle. I have not visited it yet to see for myself.
This thread is an inquiry for more opinions - like James's post (Thank you James)

I have read Leisureville and was sort of put off by the kind of sophomoric attitude that some of the people seemed to have toward socializing. Not my style at all, but great for some people.

From what I've noticed there are two different kinds of over 55 communities, actually more when economics are taken into consideration.
You have the places with young retirees, say 55, 60's, and early 70's where there seems to be more physical activities, dancing in the streets, and more couples in places like the Villages. Then you have the ones with a greater proportion of older people like Centry Village where you barely see anyone outside and more widows and widowers and seniors over 70.
As for economics there is a difference there too. In communities with houses you're going to find more people with pensions and who have a lot of equity from their homes. Some are second homes and some are permanent abodes. I would guess they would have the highest proportion of couples too. In my over 55 mobile home park there is a woman across the street from me who's single and a guy next door. Both of them still work. There is a lot of going back and forth to the immediate neighbors where I am which I enjoy but you still have your privacy. It's not formal in any respect, just a pop in for a couple of minutes or longer akin to what you get in a college dorm. We all look after one another. We don't have as many activites as in the Villages but are close enough to enjoy their free music. I did too notice that people I knew in the Villages spent a lot more time going out to dinner than at my place as they have more money in general.
Not sure if there is specifically any place to look up info of this sort other than talking to people.
There is also a difference in Fla as to where people predominantly come from. You'll find more NE's on the east coast and more Midwesterners in middle Fla and on the west coast which tends to be more laid back. Central Fla is a bit more rural, small town.

I was just reading in a magazine at work, 'Retirement Living' (I think it was) that about 25% of the people in 55+ communities are single. The home owners association for the community could give you an idea. A word of caution though, it also mentioned a 55+ community near Miami (sorry don't remember the name) that a Dr. quoted as having nearly as many STD occurances as the entire city of Miami. A pretty sobering thought if you were thinking of moving to one and making the rounds.

STDs Running Rampant In Retirement Community - Orlando News Story - WKMG Orlando
Doctors said sexually transmitted diseases among senior citizens are running rampant at a popular Central Florida retirement community, according to a Local 6 News report.
A gynecologist at The Villages community near Orlando, Fla., said she treats more cases of herpes and the human papilloma virus in the retirement community than she did in the city of Miami.
"Yeah, they are very shocked (to hear the diagnosis)," gynecologist Dr. Colleen McQuade said. "I had a patient in her 80s."
The above is from the link and there is no claim by this poster that the information contained is accurate.
Note also the wording that the rate in the seniors treated was greater than the rate she was treating folks at in Miami not the rate of Miami. Could be that seniors in the 55+ were either more active or took more chances or a few guys went there looking for the La Dolce Vita.

It just goes to show that it is the behavior that spreads these diseases and there is no immunity because of age. I think it says more about the people there than anything else - they seem to have a feeling of immunity because of their age similar to the foolish risks so many teens take because they have a feeling of invincibility.
But disease germs take up residence in whatever host they can find.

Taking my FIL to The Villages
I was thinking of taking of my FIL up to The Villages but after reading the above about STD's, not so sure. He loves to dance with the ladies but we don't need it going further than that (he is 87) and just broke his hip but is recovering.

A few guys got a hold of Viagra and intend to enjoy it despite the consequences. If you ever read their forums at the Villages, some of them talk like little kids with baby lanquage. That would gag me real fast.
