I don't have to do the COBRA thing. Aside from a COLA pension, I have the same health insurance for the same price as when I was an employee. A great benefit, I know. So for about $80 a month I have health coverage with either a $15 or a $25 co-pay depending on whether it's for a routine appointment or a specialist, and I have prescription and dental coverage. My insurance covers 100% of everything else. Once I'm eligible for Medicare, my monthly costs will decrease.

Well, today I decided to head to a nearby nature center to take a walk. While there, I met a young mother who had her 2 little ones with her, and she told me about another park just a few miles from me, so I decided to check it out. What a beautiful little park that winds around the waterfront, with a couple of miles of walking trails. I'm excited about finding it, and being able to keep my promise to myself to try to walk for an hour or so everyday. And in such a nice location...it was really enjoyable.

It doesn't matter how happy you were to retire, it's a hugh adjustment. In the end it's all worth. Sounds like you're off to the right start!

I am sort of being "forced" to retire. I left a permanent Federal govt. position 2 years ago to take a temporary position that I was assured would become permanent. Well...due to budget issues, my term will not be extended beyond November 2009 so I must retire from the federal govt. 3 years shy of my retirement date. I'm desperately trying to sell off stuff, including my house that I will no longer be able to afford. I'm scared of the major adjustment I am going to have to make prematurely since I was going to retire when I was 62 instead of sooner. I'm 58 now. I am also looking to move to a more affordable small city somewhere in the West and I currently live in CA, which is way too expensive.

Hi Arabian - thanks for joining in. Sorry to hear about your situation. It's great to retire, but not so great to be forced into it before you're ready. Any chance you can transfer to another position to ride out the next 3 years? I know it's not a good time to be job-hunting, but from what I've heard the few places that are hiring are government agencies. If you're thinking of relocating anyway, maybe you could find something in another area. If not, how will losing those last 3 years affect your pension?

It's nice being able to do these things on your own time, isn't it?

Janetvj-- Sounds like you are getting out and exploring nature, I just love being outside especially when the weather is nice, not too hot or cold. I really want to see the national parks, they look so beautiful when I see them on the Travel Channel, I am sure seeing them in person will be a real memorable event. My husband and I just found a 1995 Class C RV with only 10k actual miles on it, and the price was great so we bought it. Now I just have to get thru the remainder of this year, we were thinking maybe we'd hit the road the middle on next April and see the parks in May before all the kids get out of school, I bet it get's real crowded in the summer time. Not sure what we'll do after that but we are starting to plan some things and I am getting excited about what is to come......

I'm desperately applying to other federal jobs so that I can finish my 3 years and get full retirement service. But I'm being told that, for every fed. job I apply to, there are more than 70 applicants! This doesn't bode well and besides that, I think I see a pattern of age discrimination in here. So, if I can't get another fed. job before my time runs out on Nov. 1st, I must develop Plan B.
