definitely not.

Retirement means not working and doing whatever you want like traveling the world. You aren't really retired if you are still working. Don't fool yourself.

well not everyone wants to travel. lots of people including myself and my wife intend to retire early and do real estate photography since photography is a passion of ours.... maybe we will earn some money, maybe not but it really dosnt matter as we dont really need the dough... it kind of just gives us a purpose to go out and do something we like.

i really wanted to get a job collecting the empty beer bottles at the local topless club but they wanted to charge me to much to work there....

Well that isn't really, "working" in a general sense since you are basically self-employed. When I think of working I think of being employed by someone and working x amount of hours each week.

You can be retired and self-employed.

I think it can include paid work if you can walk off the job any time you want or need to and not have a financial issue.
I second the person who doesn't wish to travel. Frankly, I can travel more with my five weeks' vacation and good paycheck now, and have realized that, baby boom mantras aside, I don't much feel like it (except for the U.S. Southwest). Now, traveling alone has its downsides. Maybe if I were coupled up I'd enjoy travel more. But it's a lot of trouble and money and frankly, I just don't feel like it.
So if I'm home a lot more and don't have to work, I might work a little for financial prudence and walking-around money. Like two shifts a week. And if it doesn't suit me, I'll let the door hit me on the way out.

i think most of us want to do something we really enjoy after we retire and sometimes that includes working in an area we consider more enjoyment then work... i think once you achieve financial independence and do whatever you want to do on your own terms that to me is as good as it gets...

i dont need to stay home or travel to consider myself retired, i just need financial independence and doing what i love to do whether its on my own, a charity or a part time business thats a passion.

"RETIREMENT MEANS NOT HAVING TO WORK, BUT NOT NECESSARILY NOT WORKING"

I like that. Taking on a part-time job because you want something to do. And telling the boss that:

"I do not need this job for financial support. My pension supports me, I am here because I want to be doing something. I could work here for free and I would be fine. but you give me any of your sh-i-t and I am gone"
