Question Anyone retired or retiring in the Jasper, Texas area?

This town received some bad press because of a racial incident, but it appears to be getting more progressive in the good sense of the word. I am looking at a place on the South end of Toledo Bend Lake in Newton County and Jasper seems to be the closest city of any size. It appears to welcome retirees. Can anyone comment on Jasper or Newton, Texas. Is there good medical in Jasper? I have land on the north end of Toledo Bend, but I don't think I want to live up there for now. A nice place to visit, but quite isolated. Jasper claims to be the gateway to the big lakes--Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Would appreciate any feedback on the area. I know the city data folks always come through--thanks!

p. s. Prices have come down for some very nice lakefront areas on the cleanest and deepest water on Toledo Bend down by the dam in northern Newton County. Got me looking down that way, again.

I had a vaction home on teledo bend for years. Jasper is npothing like protrayed on the dragging incident. Those guys were bascially likie so many crimianl that knock old wpomen in the ehad for thier opuses and kil peole in cities over nothing really. Its by far the best place for medical attnetion. Eniugh for emergency and then of course not taht far to be tranferred to one pof the best in the woprld in Houston. As you get north on Teledo it gets more rural and on the louisana side not alot has changed really as its very rural. You might find however that for specailist you might still be traveling to Beaumnt area for doctor visits.I will say that in a hurricane like Rita you stiul will get alot of trees down and longer power outages.I konow peole that had alot of damage from falling trees during Rita as the winds got very high and the old growth trees took a big hit.Afterall you are basically living in the woods and winds in excwss of 90 miles ahour will effect any area like that.

Thumbs up Thanks for reply, Texdav. Beaumont medical

I appreciate your prompt reply. I sorta dread going into Houston as the traffic is too much for me. It is good to know that Beaumont is a medical option. Of course world-class medical is in Houston. I don't think Rita was much less destructive on mid-Toledo Bend. True, the north end is a good 60 miles further north so the winds would die down abit. At least there is no tidal surge or water damage for South Toledo Bend. Keep in touch. God Bless.
