Post News, AARP: Those 50-64 hit hard by health costs.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UPI) -- U.S. adults ages 50-64 are particularly vulnerable to high healthcare spending and are usually ineligible for Medicare, officials of AARP say.

AARP released a report Monday saying problems experienced by 50- to 64-year-old seniors are not limited to those without insurance -- those who have coverage faced higher health costs than younger adults.

We have seen our insurance premiums almost double in the last three years. Our health care costs (insurance, deductibles, and out-of-pocket) exceeded $12K last year... for a couple with no major illness!

As to the Op statement;of course they do as older people actually require more treatment. Some of it can be recovered if very high but its got to go over the standrard deductable.$500 month each is pretty common for two people for insurance now days depending on the policy. Many in this age range only go long form because of medical cost.If you watch the debates with obama and clinton ;he said that even with the healthcare plan he proposed then that many young people will not signup because they would think the cost is too high for their situation.Up until I was 50 my healthcare cost beyond paying the premium was really very little.Once over 50 that is when the preventive test really start.

Yup, The company my husband retired from dropped coverage on me and the kids once he qualified for medicare. I'm 10 years younger and we have 2 teens. The kids got covered under NC Health choice, a program for children of the working poor, but nothing for me. At $7 an hour and husband just has social security, no savings or pension, I couldn't even afford a policy if it was $50 a month. I hear lots of people complain that the health ins. is getting high, but just be grateful that you have enough money to pay for it at all.

Have you looked into medicaid? From the sound of it you might qualify.Your husabnd might look to a partitme job which is what several people I know do to pay their medical insurance.
