The reason is, although I owe nobody money, in the event of a ctastrophy-----a person / court order can sieze your bank account but no one can sieze a govt check.
The second a govt check hits your bank via direct deposit, it is part of your ---bank account.

Set up a separate bank account for your social security deposit. It cannot be seized. If you cash the check, the cash can be seized.
