It sounds like those on this thread are pretty careful about their food and cooking habits -- which is nice to hear.
BUT... How am I gonna get free fuel for my 'Grease Burner' cars?

Oh yeah, I must have forgot about the 'other' folks, eat those fries!!! (Chinese and Mexican is best grease for fuel, fewer FFA's. (burgers)

Those donut eaters should get me by until Algae comes of age. I can grow plenty of that in the PNW (on my roof and sidewalks). A greenhouse with rotating algae tubes in in my future

Default Living on $18,000 a year -- by choice

Here's a nice little artical I thought some might find to be a nice read.

Thanks for the link. This is what I'm living on. The only clincher for me is...rising property taxes. If I could find a nice little bungalow with taxes under $900/yr for the rest of my life I'd be all set! Easier said than done in this part of the country.

None of us know what will happen in the future, property taxes could rise at any time.

However in the mean time, our property taxes are below that level.

Latashia, I couldn't agree with you more about the property taxes in the northeast. That's why we moved south.

Good link!

Looking at the $$ for property taxes back East just make me shudder.

I am from California, my siblings stayed in California. I moved on.

I think that you mean Eastern 'cities' though.

For most of my land the property taxes run around a dollar per acre here in Maine.

If you compare Eastern taxes to California, you will find that California's are much higher. [I once owned rural land in California]

Yes, I did. Not enough coffee in me yet to type clearly

Overall, taxes are higher in CA - which is one reason I'll be leaving in about 40 months, LOL.

But some of these property taxes I see listed in other states are just ... astounding. I have over 2000 sf on 2/3 acre, and pay less than $1500 a year.

I like the taxes in your part of Maine better, though

And I would too but I think I would about die in the kind of heat and humidity that is probably double what we have here, and that is bad enough!! This is off-topic perhaps, but it does relate to the cost of air-conditioning (a shoestringer issue)....but how ARE you as a Northerner handling the climate there? Is your AC constantly running?

There are many areas including the PNW and New Hampshire and New York state that are much worse than where I am. Perhaps some areas of CA as well. I think that with many states in dire fiscal trouble it could become widespread. Are there any towns with NO SCHOOLS??? lol
