Cool One person's home spot may be our horror spot!

Marmac, the regulars on most state forums always suggest this to folks who after a lovely vacation to a new state decide they want to move or retire there.

Many times this turns out to be a disastrous decision. Riverbird was fortunate that she was able to move back to her home place, but many, once they move, have no funds to move again when they discover they are terrified of the new tornado threats, or didn't realize it rained so much in their new home area, or cannot take the summer humidity there!

It is always wise to visit a place you are considering during every season of the year and even plan on renting for a year versus buying right away. Always leave yourself an out, so if that paradise you envisioned doesn't pan out for you, you can find another that might come closer to what you wish for.

Very few of us will find the PERFECT place, but we should certainly put more effort into finding a good place for ourselves than we would if we were buying a new pair of shoes.

Gemkeeper, very good advice for people...That is exactly what I did when looking for a place to relocate to retireFirst off I took my time, didn't rush into anything, started looking 5 years before I retired,Every place I
was interested in I found out info such as..crime stats..flood zone..
zoning laws..sexual predators in area..what is in area in general..I
found out the general info online(a lot of info right here on citydata forum)
I would visit the areas,staying over a weekend,or more,talking to people
the neighbors where the realtors took us,the local police, visit the local shopping and ask questions, and it all worked out great There is no perfect place,It's what works best for that indivivual in a certain situation.PA
worked out great for me and my family because it doesn't tax my pension
and cost of living is good and a great quality of life
The bottom line is do your homework and make the move work for you
I'm still only 2 hours from NY and family

I have met many people that had to leave after retiring in their idea area.Almost all had retired to acreage in fairly remote areas. The reason they moved went from not being use to being snowed-in in colorado to not having good medical facilities nearby after a health problem. A few from more urban areas was that the area was much different than when they vactioned there and basic missing their hometown.

It sounds wonderful . I am going to Google it to check out the real estate. How is the climate there (compared to say, Long Island or NYC) ?

I have the home 2 years now and It's about a ten degree difference in temp.
The past 2 winters weren't bad at all,I guess due to global warming?
It's approx. 2 hours from staten island, the homes and taxes are affordable
clarks summit is also refered to as the abingtons. The people are very friendly
my neighbors are great, they had a dinner party for us just because we were
moving there, not to mentions the numerous times they had us at there house and took us around the area helping us around...very touching.. also there is a photo tour of the area
on the NEPA forum, scranbarre does a lot of photo tours of the area..along with the photo
tour he gives a whole story of the area...very good

gemkeeper - pretty funny, actually I used to put more effort into finding the right pair of shoes, than where I will spend my retirement years. Good advice, I must say!

Coartist88...I think it really helps others when you are so open about how you made your move. Thank you.

I found this website very interesting. The man who runs it, found what he was looking for in PA, as well. He gives a lot of info on taxes, retirement pensions, and general tips for retirement living. I like the idea that he and regular contributors (like ourselves) share their knowledge.

I hope someone can find useful info here. I did!
