The "caveman"
If he is happy, then so be it. I'll take my creature comforts which I do not take for granted - any day. However, when I get home, I'll treasure my home a little more. I am grateful for it.
No matter how bad the day has been, when I go to sleep, I try to think of 6 things I am grateful for each night.

Me either. I used to think living that way might be cool, way back when I read My Side of the Mountain. And then I had my 10th birthday and realized what a stupid idea it was.

So he is just a homeless guy living in the wild instead of the city.......And 48 is not "retired". Though there was an old guy I remember seeing a documentary in Alaska who built a cabin and lived alone for many years. Definitely not for everybody.

Let's keep this informative post right at the top where we can all use it as a roll model for how we DON'T want to live!
PS Maybe you were being sarcastic. In that case my apologies.

you sure got that correct... i cant imagine there are many that frequent these forums not to better themselves, learn how to increase their retirement income and to find ways to better their lives .
...
you always get a few that take pride in being a dumpster diver or living life on the cheap beyond what most of us would consider as acceptable but for the most part this is not how we all want to end up

You know, we are not a monolithic group here all in agreement on anything. There have been many threads on how to retire with very little resources as well as how to maximize resources. Everyone who wishes to retire won't have a comfortable and secure income. Some will.
I personally have no intention of retiring like this guy and do not think his ideas can work for any but a very few in the society at large. All the same, I found his choices and life an interesting thing to read about. I would not have been exposed to his ideas without the link. So I thank the OP for the interesting read. Finding interesting other ways of doing things is a big reason why I hang out here. I can broaden my horizons vicariously.
Some of this guy's ideas do have a place in some people's retirement plans. Things like deciding just what you need and what is superfluous. Do we take it to his extremes? No, but there is some food for thought as we move to this later phase of our lives that will give us more latitude to decide what our own individual paths will be. That you can only ridicule ideas other than your own says a lot more about you than it does about this guy.
He makes his choices and seems to be living them for the most part while harming no one. He is literate and has thought his choices thru. For that, he deserves respect whether or not I or any one else agrees with him. What a dull world this would be if we all did the same exact things and had all the exact same thoughts.

Re the article: Says he who does not yet need a Level 1 or 2 trauma center. Do you think he will accept help when he needs it? I don't know....
Yes, I think I could survive. And I believe I could live much "better" than Mr. Suelo. I think most of us could. I also think one can do it without living in a stinky cave. Take a freakin' bath for god's sake. Sure seems like he's working hard at living 'free'.
Ah well, such is life~~~
