I find it really quite simple. I either have it or I don't. I'm a boomer who survived the market melt-down without losing a penny by parking my 401(k) in a safe, savings fund as soon as I read the market tea leaves and continued to invest and save. I also was in a career that provides me with a defined-benefit retirement which, with the addition of Social Security, is more than ample for my needs.

To me, the only "secret" was hard work, reasonable frugality and prudence!

money can mean a few things to people.

some people love money for what it is, money... to them it represents power, financial indepedence, succcess,... they hate spending it. they like to look at the numbers more then the things money buys

some like money for the things it buys, they like spending money and enjoying the material things it brings them

some like donald trump or the owner of the firm i work for like earning money more then they like the money.. for this group its all about the deal. its all about building a successful company or buying a bankrupt one and making it successful. these people usually have all the money they need already. they are driven by ego , by motivation , by glowing in their success....

Security. At least as much as it can provide.

It does not represent material things, happiness, etc. It only represents security.

I agree. Money represents security for me since I had none as a child and the absence of money often meant hunger and no shelter.

Default Freedom

For me, money best represents the freedom to make the choices I want to make.

Security, protection from others' foibles, options. Modest ability to give it to people or groups who are making things happen that I want to see happen.
Aesthetics- can live in pretty places and look at artwork and have trees outside while still living near a job or decent city for medical care, activities...
Money now represents my time- I work my hours and get paid. If someone messes with my money, they're messing with my life's time, that part that is spent making money.
I guess, for me, "buying stuff" comes in after dead last.
