On the surface this is true. However, don't let your local child welfare secret police find you you slapped your kid or you'll be in jail faster than you can blink. This fear is what restrains most parents from using good old fashioned corporal punishment.

That Old Fart was stupid for slapping the kid.

He should have used a stun gun.

Wow. People around here are in favor of assault and battery for touching a cell phone, calling a person a name, and in favor of homicide for threatening a pet.

I guess I'm glad we have laws to restrain these violent impulses.

Wow. I never dreamed that an "old fart" could be a "breath of fresh air".

37 years ago my father was outside doing some yard work when a bunch of young kids on bikes rode by and started harrassing him and calling him names. When two of them came on the property and really antagonized him, he slapped the kid plum off his bicycle. the kid cried home to his father. My dad got himself together- this was a retired bird colonel in the army and went to the father to apologize. The father decked my dad and broke two of his teeth.

Who was right and who was wrong? My mother was crying too about "John, you can't hit somebody else's kid. We could lose everything we've worked so hard for."

If it had happened today they would have lost everything in a law suit I'm sure.

Yeah, but I think it's because of those like you is why kids act the way they do now days!!!!!!

Had I called some one an old fart in front of my parents or they heard that I did I'd been glad to get away with just a slap..

I find stories like this terrifying because its saying - no one is allowed to defend themselves. I'm not a violent person and find confrontation difficult. I tend to retreat. Once on my own property what am I supposed to do if mean people harrass t mehere? If I waited for someone to hit me first I'm probably in no shape to hit back or maybe even call the police.

I fully agree, that deliberately offending behavior from some 12-14 year old could be very challenging. At this point of my life I am determined to ignore it, unless physical contact is involved.
I had a few occasions when young teenagers were behaving inappropriately, and it raised my blood pressure, fortunately it was very brief, and I kept in mind, that any adequate response could bring me to prison. Prison as a result of hitting the kid, or as a consequences after possible confrotation with the kid's parent. It's just not worthy.
Nowdays, the society is set up to favor young offenders in these situations. Kids have a highly priviledged 'holy cow' status (which is often abused), while mature adults, especially white males are discriminated.

QUESTION regarding no kudzu's post:
When I was growing (in Europe), it used to be a standard, that any adult corrected (physically) misbehaving kids.
Was the situation the same also in this country, or the parents were always too touchy if other adults corrected their children?
