Does anyone have any experience filing for SS benefits online, not disability, normal SS monthly retirement benefits.

Wondering how long it takes to hear from SS or any other tips and how long it takes to be notified after filing by regular mail and what other info is required after filing online. Not much info when googled or on the SS website about timing etc.

Thanks

I did everything online. Was called by a nice person named Mrs. Baxter who asked me a few questions. Make sure you have all the dates, marriages, deaths, divorces, remarriages written down or in your head. Makes a difference to them. Did nothing in person. I have to say...SS is one organized entity.

you didn't have to mail anything to SS, all by telephone?

If that is the case, Great for SS.

I did everything on line over the course of a week (saved file on the SS site). When you establish your online account, they will give you a list of information you will need. You don't have to fill everything out in one session; you can do a little at a time. The site is very user friendly. I was notified that I needed to bring my original birth certificate to the SS office. I did not have to wait in line, just a sign in for those bringing documents. I waited about 10 minutes, provided the document, they made a copy and I was on my way home.

I asked the question because I filed online 3 weeks ago and have heard nothing. When I check the status it says I will be notified by US mail. I guess I just don't quite understand the process.

I filed for SS online but also called the local Social Security office just to speak to a real person. I got an appointment for a telephone interview during which we went over my online application. Got info in the mail within 10 days with the name of a person to call if I had questions. Also told me how much I would receive and when it would begin. Never had to go to the office or take in any documents. It all worked perfectly! I was very impressed with the efficiency.

The wife just did it and we are very happy and they were excellent and efficient. She applied on a Monday and got a phone call on the following Saturday. Their were several follow up phone calls to keep her posted and we were amazed. Not normal to get such great service and follow up from a not for profit agency.

It may be helpful to have previously logged on to their site and been registered. We were and all of our information was up to date and matched tax records etc. We also had a very simple history of one marriage 38 years and the same employer for over 35 years. We were very simple.
