(Since many/most grandparents are retired, this seems to fit here).

IMO, three things contribute to this relationship bond:
1). Grandparents are at a point where they realize how quickly childhood passes and don't want to waste it.
2). Post-career/child-rearing/retirement-prep. grandparents realize there are more important things in life.
3). Grandparents are beginning to come to grips with their own mortality and want to leave value behind.

What do you think?

Grand parents in many cases actually spoil the children and don't have to live with the results often. Much different from raising a child really .Its quite easy as always being the good guy.

In other words, I put it that the best part is we can give them back!

My MIL used to say that it was all the fun...and none of the responsibility.

Some of us grandparents WERE the disciplinarians and still manage to have a great relationship with their grandkids.

So do many parents but that is not the point at all. Normally the parent does the parenting.

Normally. I'm just saying that some of us grandparents didn't have the luxury of spoiling the grand kids. If the parent isn't doing the parenting, someone has to.
In answer the to OP's question:
I think that by the time we are grandparents, we've reached a level of maturity that makes it easier to deal with kids in a consistent and loving manner. Whether we spoil them or not, we mostly have a calmer way of dealing with most things. IMO, kids crave that. Especially these days when everything is constantly changing.
