NEgirl, We bought in each place, and thru sheer LUCK, not talent or extra knowledge, we made money off each home. We will probably break even with this current home which is now on the market--thankfully we bought when the housing market was low here---sheer luck again!

We may rent for a while this time though, as where we are moving has such a variety of neighborhoods, it will take us more time than usual to know which ones will work for us.

Favorite place?
Each place had something really special about it, but both my husband and I keep saying New England was our best experience (although we loved the PNW and sailing into town on our small sailboat to get our mail and groceries).
We lived in two different NE towns and each was quintessentially charming and historically NE. Coming from the ADHD energy of the West, we loved the stability, pride, commitment, and traditions of the NE communities.

We were warned moving from the West that we would hate NE people who are supposedly reserved and cold. We loved NE people. So many amazingly talented and accomplished people with quiet and gentle egos and friendships that were built on substance not superficiality which you see in the materialistic West often.

The reasons we moved from favorite place were that we retired (home business--can live anywhere) and NE was too expensive and my health had deteriorated from the weather (it picked right up when we moved to the Southwest, as I really need more sun and vit D) And I missed the mountains painfully so. I have lived in the Sierras, Cascades, Selkirks/Bitteroots, and Rockies--I need those big beautiful mountains, and that's what we like about Western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge areas.

I agree that your thinking has a lot to do with how old you feel. But it also has to do with what happens to you along the way. I felt very young until one day I woke up and felt numbness in my toes and a disconcerting ache in the middle of my back. I was diagnosed as having sciattica, a catch all phrase that many seemed to have experienced. Even though their experience was painful they seemed to recover. This gave me hope. I, however, was not one of the lucky ones, the chiropractors, there were two, would tell me that everyone responded differently in their own time. Well, almost a year and ahalf later I finally got to someone who could properly diagnose my condition, it wasn't sciattica, it was a deterioriating verterbrae that was deterioriating and pressing on my spine. The good news is that they can stop any further damage with surgery, the bad news is that I won't get any better. I now limp, walk with a cane and have problems balancing. I am feeling old.

Just curious... which New England towns did you live in and love?

An in the Blue Ridge area, which towns resonated with you in terms of being the age that you are?

I am in the same boat. I really want to retire but my employer hasn't retired me yet!! I tend to do better during my off time with exercise, etc. When I work, I have long day (long commute), so there isn't as much time for exercising. I also feel that sense of calmness during free time.

Yes, thanks for the quick reminder. I have done this once or twice on threads that I started myself! This may be a focus problem that I have to nip in the bud.

As for staying healthy, my biggest concern now is learning how not to eat after a certain time in the evening, as I notice that this puts the weight on. Several books I'm reading urge people (esp less active folks) to allow 12 full hours between the last meal at night and the first meal of the next day. So much easier said than done. Does anyone try to practice this?

NEGirl,
Didn't want to get off topic with answers to your questions, so I tried to PM you with answers to your questions but you can't be PMed. If still interested, PM me and I'll be glad to get back to you.

I'd be hard-pressed *not* to practice this; it's what I've always done without thinking about it. It's never had any effect on my weight that I can tell, ie I gained and lost weight through the years while doing it.

I finally shed my unwanted 20 lbs in 2007-08 and have kept if off for 2.5 years now. Along the way, I accidentally discovered the very simple trick that works for me: diet to lose the weight, exercise to keep it off.

Excellent observation! No matter how scrupulous we are about our diet, exercise, and regular check-ups, there are still countless things that can bite us in the butt - or back, or knee, or pancreas. We've all got targets marked everywhere on/in our bodies; all we can do is try to minimize the number of targets.

NEG ~ I'm a grazer, I eat about 5 times a day and my last consumption of food is around 6:30 PM. I usually eat a very healthy breakfast around 7 am !! I've maintained size 10 for most of my adult life
