My late mother actually watched a lot less after she stopped working. It freed up time for her to learn to cook (for which I was extremely grateful ), study other languages, and take up violin. (For which the neighbors were....less grateful).

My parents never had cable or satellite, just the 5 standard stations available here. My mom also had this thing about watching TV during the day. To her, that was the absolute WORST thing anyone could do with their time. She often watched the government-run 'foreign' channel to brush up on her German and Russian languages...but not during the day, of course.

I used to wish she didn't watch the news so much. She liked to keep up with current affairs, and never bought a paper, but watching the news seemed to have quite a negative affect on her, with all the crap that was happening in the world. It made her worry a lot more, so I can understand how it could be negative health-wise.

That's a very good point. I think my husband is the same way. He spends most of his free time watching news and listening to political talk radio, and he thinks the world is a scary, dangerous place. I keep trying to tell him that his view is distorted. News programs don't report on the positive things that happen ever day. They only tell you about the explosions, fires, murders and scandals.
