Anyone dump their cable in the Providence area?

Did you go to an antenna for free HD channels? What, specifically, can you pick up?

ABC, NBC, CBS, the PBS stations, CW, ION with the converter box. There's others too I think plus some have 2 versions. 10.1 is NBC while 10.2 is RetroTv for example

I'm not from Providence, but doing a search on RabbitEars.Info , I found the following stations within 40 miles of Providence. You could probably receive all of these with a modest outdoor antenna on a rotator, or even an omni-directional outdoor antenna or possibly rabbit ears if you have a favorable location:

2.1 WGBH-HD PBS Boston
2.2 WGBH-SD PBS Boston (probably a standard-definition simulcast)
4.1 WBZ CBS HD
5.1 WCVB ABC HD
6.1 WLNE ABC HD
7.1 WHDH NBC HD
7.2 This TV
10.1 WJAR NBC HD
10.2 RTN
12.1 WPRI CBS HD
12.2 The Cool TV
25.1 Fox 25
27.1 Univision
27.2 LATV
28.1 CW
28.2 LATV
36.1 Rhode Island PBS
36.2 WSBE Learn
38.1 TV 38
44.1 WGBX
44.2 PBS World
44.3 PBS Create
44.4 PBS Kids

I rarely get 12, or Boston 02, and today no 36.1/2. Last year when the leaves came off the trees it seemed to have improved. This year it seems worse.

I get about 12 stations with just an indoor digital antena ..but the digital signal sucks, I constantly have to move my antena around to get different channels, depending on the time of day, the weather, or God forbid a car comes by and cuts out the signal .. but i fefuse to pay for cable .. most of it is crap i dont wanna see anyway..i can watch anything i want on line and hook it up to my tv

We got these channels in Providence, lived near Classic High School. We are now 7 miles further south and only get the Providence Channels. We went cableless in 2012 and haven't looked back (have HD Antenna, Netflix, Hulu Plus and Chromecast). We also got and have FOX Providence Channel 64.

Antennaweb is a good tool. You can put in a specific address and whether the antenna will be more than 30 feet off the ground. So whether you're on the third floor or can install on the roof.

http://antennaweb.org/Address.aspx

If you can't put a small antenna on your roof I wouldn't go crazy with a higher priced indoor antenna. If you own your home and can put an antenna on the roof something like this below is a great deal.

Spectrum Antenna Motorized Outdoor Long Range Digital TV Antenna SP715

$90 bucks and has a rotor so you can move it around. It's tiny since its just for digital signals. Small so it won't be an issue with wind.

Figure basic cable is about $15 a month - that doesn't include the secondary channels like MyRITV, Grit etc. & you still need a box for $6 or so a month. $252 a year and you get less than with a decent antenna set up.
