Traveling and vacationing vs. settling down in a new area doesn't give a well rounded perspective of any area. Some southerners lump in NY and NJ as being part of New England. We've had to explain sometimes that New England is only RI, CT, MA, ME, NH and VT. I agree that the south is more friendly, more refined, less stressful and relaxed. My neighbors down the road are from Saugus, MA, and they are still destressing.

Accept or forgive, but never respect anyone's right to be rude or unfriendly. Where is your head at? Welcome to New England then, you'll probably love Mass.

Saltatrix,
Haha...I never said I like unfriendly/rude people, but what ever floats ones boat. Personally, I thrive on the friendly/polite and try not to let the negative ruin my day. I just feel everyone has a unique point of view which sometime invades one personality, that does not me I want to go out for drinks with someone who consistently wakes up on the wrong side of the bed.
Group,
While I do not want this to necessarily change the direction this post is heading, as I am putting together a great list of potential areas. I have not completely, removed Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine from the list. However, Connecticut and Rhode Island are not looking to promising.

Perhaps in some parts of Maine (family lives up there) or New Hampshire, other family, or northern VT, but definitely not from Boston south.
I use the southern states as my definition of laid-back. I just don't see it in the north.

Well I am originally from the Tampa Bay area of Florida, and have been living in RI for over seven years now. I would absolutely say Rhode Island is actually more laid back than FL. There is a sense of community here that is unspoken, yet palpable. I was just in Florida for XMas and my perception ws that it is far more stressful down there. Not to mention that seeing the American flag in the shape of a cross on bumper stickers, and Confederate Flags, and vulgar messages denigrating our president were all stress inducing.
I'll take laid back little Rhody any day of the week over Florida.
I think the lesson here is what is stressful to some people, may be laid back to others.

Any explanation? It's very difficult to try to help someone and then have them discount your advice with no apparent reason.

Hollytree,
It is nothing against either state, this post just seems to favor Massachusetts, given my criteria. I definitely, plan on visiting RI & CT.
Happy New Year

PS
Hollytree,
Do not think for a moment that I have not noted your suggestions. As I said in my last post I plan to visit several areas in RI.
The last thing I want is for someone to think their suggestions are not appreciated/valued.
But, when a RI thread appears to favor Massachussetts, one cannot overlook this fact.

hi there!
there is a ton of culture in providence!!! despite what i am reading above....thayer street hosts a variety of coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, a ton of diversity for the preppie to the beatneak to the sports enthusiast....RISD is up the road adn has one of the most impressive small museums in the northeast....brown is also right there.....the east side of providence is a great place to live.....stay away from providence college area, those are the party areas that make the news...you dont see a ton of brown or risd kids stumbling around...they re paying 50K a year...and working hard....you will be amongst some of the most talented and intelligent young minds in the northeast.
there are many young professionals and everything you want will be within 20 mins or less.....the airport, the beaches, any kind of ethnic food you could dream of.....stay away from DOWNTOWN apts, and concentrate on the east side, thayer street area. Benefit street is like a living postcard...wickeden street is also adorable altho i wouldnt live in that area personally.
now if you could manage it, you would be in one of the best places in the world, imo, if you could find an affordable place in newport....there you would be more like 30 to 40 min from the airport, but 5 min to the beach.....and it truely would be amazing. trust me!
boston is busy, crowded, and driving is a holy nightmare....and north of boston, east of boston, west of boston and south of boston....all a nightmare. if you enjoy sitting in traffic for 2 hrs for a 10 miles drive, then boston is your town. it is a great town, yankee stadium is amazing, the people are great and there are many colleges and universities and tons of culture.....however, be prepared to pay double or triple for a place to live and be up for the commute....
best of luck to you!!!!!!!
