Any experiences with University Gastroenterology?
Hey everyone, this my first time on the Rhode Island forums, I live in Providence and my primary physician recently diagnosed me with Crohn's disease, he made a couple of recommendations regarding which doctors around the providence area I should see, and I did a bit of googling about it myself. I keep coming to this http://www.universitygi.com]University Gastroenterology website and I've read some nice reviews online about their doctors. They specialize in stomach, liver and kidney problems. I haven't gone to a new doctor in nearly 15 years and I've NEVER gone to a new doctor without consulting friends and family. Unfortunately I don't know many people with GI problems that I can ask. So before I go put myself under the knife so to speak, is there anyone out there in Rhode Island that has experience with University Gastroenterology? I just need some feedback, especially if you've been there for treatment related to Crohn's disease, I don't know much about it except what I've read on the web and I want to make sure I'm making the right choice.
Thank You,
Jean Markosi

My husband has Crohn's. We have recently moved from the Rhode Island area but he had very good Drs while we lived there. Prima Care in Fall River has a Gastro practice, Dr. Schnure was his Dr. as well as another Dr. in the group who I can't think of right now. The convenient part of Primacare is they have a full lab and CT scanner on the first level.
Hopefully your Crohn's can be controlled will medication, there are many different types depending on your level of disease. My husband's had progressed after 30 years to the point of surgery. Should you find yourself in that unfortunate position Dr. Elizabeth Breen at Brigham and Women's in Boston is the best possible Surgeon to have. She is amazingly skilled, kind and a realist. If my husband needed another surgery, we would fly across the country for her to do it.
Though surgery was a scary prospect, my husband recovered quickly and has a much better quality of life now. Hopefully you can find the right combination of medication and diet to make your life easier.

I am a GI nurse practitioner. There are many wonderful gastroenterologists in RI. I'd recommend Jeremy Spector, MD or Samir Shah, MD at Gastroenterology Associates on West River St in Providence. They are affiliated with Miriam Hospital. Dr. Spector did his GI fellowship at Duke, Dr. Shah at Harvard. Both are excellent. Best of luck.

The Rhode Island Monthly magazine does a periodic survey on the top doctors in various specialties in RI. Believe they just did one a couple months ago.
I find most all of the Brown University affiliated practice physicians to be generally good. However, if you go to a group practice and you happen to not like the one you've picked, you can always try someone else in the group.

Excellent advice; Drs. Spector and Shah are two of the best, if not the best, in their field, and Miriam is a top hospital. (the RI Monthly magazine's "top doctors" is a survey of their peers taken by other doctors, not as reliable as LDJ's opinion above, imo.) We may live in NC, but LJD and I are native RI "lifers".

I can recommend Dr. Thomas Sepe at University Gastroenterology's Providence office; he's my GI doctor for gluten intolerance issues. I can also recommend the docs at their Warwick/East Greenwich office, who looked after me when I was hospitalized and, in fact, diagnosed my problem. You won't go wrong with any of them. Good luck!
